3M introduces new fax modem cards at Fall COMDEX; enhanced convenience for mobile computer users.LAS VEGAS--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Nov. 14, 1994--3M has unveiled two new data/fax modem cards for mobile computer users who require fast and flexible electronic communications regardless of their location. The easy-to-install, credit card-sized fax/modem cards provide a convenient and powerful communications tool for mobile computer users equipped with a PCMCIA (Personal Computer Memory Card International Association, San Jose, CA, www.pcmcia.org) An international standards body and trade association that was founded in 1989 to establish a standard for connecting peripherals to portable computers. PCMCIA created the PC Card. See PC Card. Type II or larger slots. With these new cards, 3M has expanded its product line to meet increasing user demand for a broader range of computing and communications devices Typically refers to a terminal used to send voice, video or text. Mobile phones, wireless PDAs and personal computers equipped with microphones, speakers and cameras are all considered communications devices. See modem. . Called 3M Standard and 3M Premium Data/Fax Modem cards, the new products can be used for a range of applications, including electronic mail, file transfer, paperless fax, and access to online services such as databases and bulletin boards. "These products arise from our focus on meeting the needs of mobile computer users," said Tim McCullough, program manager, PC Card Products, Data Storage Diskette The official name for the floppy disk. See floppy disk. diskette - floppy disk and Optical Technology Division. Both products will be available through 3M's worldwide network of distributors beginning in December. Pricing details will be provided at that time. 3M's new data/fax modem cards feature Megahertz' patented XJACK "popout" phone jack that eliminates the need for mobile computer users to carry bulky bulk·y adj. bulk·i·er, bulk·i·est 1. Having considerable bulk; massive. 2. Of large size for its weight: a bulky knit. 3. Clumsy to manage; unwieldy. external connectors or replace custom connectors that get damaged or lost. "Today's on-the-move business person wants to be able to communicate with customers and colleagues regardless of their location," said Stan Miller, market development manager, 3M Data Storage Markets Division. "With the use of mobile computers continuing to grow dramatically, we see excellent potential for easy-to-use products that deliver both performance and value to users." Both 3M's Premium and Standard models include auto installation software that guides users through quick and simple installation. Both products also include a "Hot Insertion See hot swap. " feature that enables users to insert and remove the data/fax modem from the PCMCIA slot without having to reboot To reload the operating system, which restarts the computer. See boot. (operating system) reboot - (From boot) A boot with the implication that the computer has not been down for long, or that the boot is a bounce intended to clear some state of wedgitude. See warm boot. or power down. A key feature of 3M's Premium model is Flash ROM Another term for flash memory. Since flash chips can be updated over and over, the ROM (read only) designation is somewhat misleading. "ROM" is used more to mean not volatile than not changeable. See flash memory. Flash ROM - Flash Erasable Programmable Read-Only Memory , which allows users to upgrade their modem with the latest improvements in data compression data compression Process of reducing the amount of data needed for storage or transmission of a given piece of information (text, graphics, video, sound, etc.), typically by use of encoding techniques. and error correction protocols -- downloaded over the phone line. 3M's Premium data/fax modem card also features MNP (Microcom Networking Protocol) A family of communications protocols from Microcom, Inc., Norwood, MA, that have become de facto standards for error correction (classes 2 through 4) and data compression (class 5). In 1997, Compaq acquired Microcom. 10, a protocol designed to increase accuracy across cellular connections. The card provides up to 14,400 bps data and fax transmission rates. For maximum efficiency, both 3M modem cards offer up to 57,600 bps with V.42bis data compression technology. This feature enhances the speed of data transmission by four times to deliver faster throughput to users.
