, Minn. -- 3M and Sanyo Electric have reached a global settlement regarding a lithium ion A rechargeable battery technology introduced in 1991 that provides greater charge per pound than nickel metal hydride. In 1993, Toshiba introduced the first notebook in the U.S. with a Li-ion battery.  battery cathode patent dispute filed in March 2007 against Sanyo and other companies in the Minnesota District Court and United States United States, officially United States of America, republic (2005 est. pop. 295,734,000), 3,539,227 sq mi (9,166,598 sq km), North America. The United States is the world's third largest country in population and the fourth largest country in area.  International Trade Commission. Under the settlement, Sanyo is now licensed under 3M's patents covering certain cathode materials. The specific terms of the settlement are confidential.

Lithium ion batteries are a preferred source of power for laptop computers, mobile phones and portable electronic devices, and are an emerging source of power for battery-powered hand tools and transport applications such as hybrid electric vehicles A hybrid electric vehicle (HEV) is a vehicle which combines a conventional propulsion system with an on-board rechargeable energy storage system (RESS) to achieve better fuel economy than a conventional vehicle without being hampered by range from a charging unit like an .

3M's cathode materials containing nickel, manganese manganese (măng`gənēs, măn`–) [Lat.,=magnet], metallic chemical element; symbol Mn; at. no. 25; at. wt. 54.938; m.p. about 1,244°C;; b.p. about 1,962°C;; sp. gr. 7.2 to 7.  and cobalt are an important technology for current and next generation lithium ion batteries. 3M supplies these patented cathode materials to the industry.

Over the past decade, 3M has invested significant resources in design, development and commercialization of advanced material technologies for lithium ion battery applications. 3M's expertise and broad materials capabilities in cathodes, metal alloy anodes, electrolyte electrolyte (ĭlĕk`trəlīt'), electrical conductor in which current is carried by ions rather than by free electrons (as in a metal).  salts, solvents, and additives can enable the next generation of high-performance lithium ion batteries.
