3M Touch Systems Announces Newly Designed Five-Wire Resistive Touch Screen Produced on a New Production Line.

Business Editors

METHUEN, Mass.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--April 9, 2002

3M Touch Systems Inc. announced today the availability of a new 5-wire resistive resistive /re·sis·tive/ (re-zis´tiv) pertaining to or characterized by resistance.  touch screen design. Built at the Resistive Center of Excellence established in Milwaukee, Wis., this product is being produced on a new, high-volume production line that went live last month. This recent development represents a significant investment by 3M and triples its touch-screen manufacturing capacity to build four-, five-, and eight-wire film-on-glass (FG) flat resisitive touch screens.

Centers of Excellence

3M Touch Systems has established several Centers of Excellence throughout North America North America, third largest continent (1990 est. pop. 365,000,000), c.9,400,000 sq mi (24,346,000 sq km), the northern of the two continents of the Western Hemisphere. . Each center institutes a highly focused, technology-driven approach to engineering and manufacturing. "Having individuals completely focused on one technology creates expert teams of people with the skills to execute one common goal -- to produce quality products the best way possible," said Fred Elias, manufacturing operations Manufacturing operations concern the operation of a facility, as opposed to maintenance, supply and distribution, health, and safety, emergency response, human resources, security, information technology and other infrastructural support organizations.  manager.

The Center of Excellence in Milwaukee is completely dedicated to building and delivering a wide portfolio of world-class resistive touch screens that offer customers a variety of solutions to be successful in the markets they serve.

"The goal of this line is to service our customers in a more responsive fashion while delivering innovative, world-class touch solutions."

New Five-wire Design

Today's new five-wire resistive design is based on a stable supply chain, vertically integrated manufacturing and advanced design improvements that have proven successful for 3M Touch Systems' four-wire and eight-wire resistive products. The five-wire design consists of a flexible hard-coated polyester film, a fully integrated tail, a rigid glass substrate and an insulator insulator

Substance that blocks or retards the flow of electric current or heat. An insulator is a poor conductor because it has a high resistance to such flow. Electrical insulators are commonly used to hold conductors in place, separating them from one another and from
material that stabilizes the resistor resistor, two-terminal electric circuit component that offers opposition to an electric current. Resistors are normally designed and operated so that, with varying levels of current, variations of their resistance values are negligible (see resistance).  pattern. Sophisticated electronics and software support the entire product line.

Five-wire resistive touch screens, popular in retail and food service point-of-sale applications, provide the ability to touch with a finger, gloved hand or any stylus. Offering a choice of glass thickness, a variety of hard coats and an extensive set of custom options, five-wire resistive designs can be ordered in a wide selection of sizes. Custom capabilities include gasket options, custom graphics and special EMI (ElectroMagnetic Interference) An electrical disturbance in a system due to natural phenomena, low-frequency waves from electromechanical devices or high-frequency waves (RFI) from chips and other electronic devices. Allowable limits are governed by the FCC.  (electromagnetic interference See EMI. ) shielding to enhance and add value to the touch screen.

Innovation You Can Touch

"This announcement marks another major step in the group's business strategy for 2002. It represents our commitment to invest in new manufacturing to deliver innovative products. It's what you would expect from 3M," said Terry Jones, business director, 3M Touch Systems.
