3M Introduces New, Low-Profile Four-Wall Header for Surface Mount Applications.

AUSTIN, Texas -- Printed circuit board designers looking to conserve board space will be interested in the new, low-profile vertical surface mount version of the 3M four-wall header 2500 series from the 3M Electronic Solutions Division. The .100" x .100" connector allows surface mount components to be placed on the opposite side of the board. The surface mount tails on the RoHS-compliant 3M design are visible, allowing for post-processing cleaning and joint inspection, which results in higher-quality assurance.

Available in 10-64 positions, these products are Restriction of Hazardous Substances (RoHS) compliant and meet JEDEC The division of the Electronic Industries Alliance (EIA) that deals with semiconductor standards (officially, the JEDEC Solid State Technology Association of EIA). JEDEC was formed in 1958 when the Joint Electron Tube Engineering Council (JETEC) split into two Joint Electron Device  J-STD-020C requirements for lead free processing. The connectors can withstand reflow (1) The process of heating and melting the solder that has been screen printed onto a printed circuit board in order to bond chips and other components to the board. Surface mount chips (SMT) use the reflow method. Contrast with wave soldering. See also reflowable text.  temperatures, including lead-free processing up to 260 degrees Celsius. The surface mount version ships in tape and reel packaging with high-temperature molded pickup caps, enabling automated pick and place for lower applied cost. It has a factory lead time of seven days. The addition of a surface mount termination style enhances the current 3M offering of plated through-hole versions used for wave solder solder (sŏd`ər), metal alloy used in the molten state as a metallic binder. The type of solder to be used is determined by the metals to be united. Soft solders are commonly composed of lead and tin and have low melting points. Hard solders (i.  and pin-in-paste processing applications.

While the surface mount version of the product is being launched as a RoHS compliant(1) offering, 3M continues to offer the 3M low-profile header solder tail 2500 series products with tin lead plating for its customers with legislative exemptions.

(1)"RoHS compliant" means that the product or part does not contain any of the following substances in excess of the following maximum concentration values in any homogeneous material, unless the substance is in an application that is exempt under RoHS: (a) 0.1 percent (by weight) for lead, mercury, hexavalent chromium Hexavalent chromium or Cr(VI) compounds are those which contain the element chromium in the +6 oxidation state.
