3M, U.S. LUGE ASSOCIATION CALL FOR LUGE RECRUITS IN SIX CITIES
Young athletes are now being recruited for the United States Junior Luge Team in an unusual national search sponsored by the U.S. Luge Association and 3M. Top junior team athletes advance to the senior national team, which competes in the World Cup and Olympic Games.
Candidates in the 3M Luge Challenge clinics will compete in wheeled luges at this year's events to be held in the following cities:
-- San Francisco (Menlo Park) -- Sept. 12-13
-- Salt Lake City (Park City) -- Sept. 19-20
 -- Denver (Highlands Ranch) -- Sept. 26-27
 -- Chicago (Naperville) -- Oct. 3-4
 -- Minneapolis/St. Paul -- Oct. 10-11
 -- Detroit (Pontiac) -- Oct. 17-18
Coaches and athletes from the U.S. Luge Team will instruct boys and girls, age 10-17, proper starting techniques, steering and riding on a modified, wheel-equipped luge sled. They will glide down a paved course. Through a careful and systematic teaching progression, athletes ultimately will learn how to maneuver a sled down a prepared course.
"The purpose of the 3M Luge Challenge is to recruit new athletes for possible selection onto one of the U.S. Junior Teams," said Fred Zimny, junior team coach and challenge instructor. Unlike sports such as basketball or gymnastics, luge has no system to teach young athletes the sport. The U.S. Luge Team depends on the 3M Luge Challenge to gain new recruits.
The top 50 or so candidates selected from challenge participants will be offered the opportunity to attend a one-week, on-ice camp in Lake Placid, N.Y. The most promising 35 candidates will be invited to a second camp, which culminates in the U.S. Junior National Luge Championships.
Top junior luge athlete Robert Pippin was selected to represent the national team and compete at the 1992 Winter Olympic Games in Albertville, France.
Clinics are held from 10 a.m. to noon and 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. on both Saturday and Sunday at each clinic site. To register, interested individuals may call toll free 1-800-USA-LUGE. Walk-up registration is also available, pending availability of space. Each 3M Luge Challenge participant receives a T-shirt and a signed certificate of participation.
3M is an associate sponsor of the U.S. Luge Association.
