3GI Supports Smart Card Expansion Internationally for U.S. Military.

SPRINGFIELD, Va.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Oct. 21, 1998--3-G International, Inc. (3GI) announces today the successful implementation of U.S. military smart card systems in Thailand and Bosnia.

3GI developed five smart card applications, and supported the issuance of multiple application cards in over 10 locations including Japan, Korea, Guam, Hungary, Germany, Thailand, Hawaii, and six bases in the continental U.S.

The multiple application cards were issued to support the Cobra Gold `98 joint military exercise in Thailand, and for the peacekeeping mission Noun 1. peacekeeping mission - the activity of keeping the peace by military forces (especially when international military forces enforce a truce between hostile groups or nations)

In Bosnia, 3GI helped issue over 2,500 multiple application smart cards to the 2nd Armed Cavalry Regiment. 3GI provided five applications for use with the military multi-application smart card to support these implementations. The applications included: Personnel Tracking; Access Control; Manifesting; Joint Reception and an in-theater database for Joint Task Force Commander.

"The smart cards were part of operational missions, not just tests," commented Patrick Kelly For other uses, see Patrick and Kelly.

During Cobra Gold, the Military also relied heavily on the smart cards for identification of individuals in Red Cross emergency situations. In Bosnia, 3GI applications supported the movement of U.S. forces for their return to the U.S., dramatically reducing the average time it typically takes to mobilize large groups of soldiers. The smart cards enabled military officials to identify, track, and manage the movements of soldiers throughout their return.

The Cobra Gold Exercise was led by the Navy, with the Marine Corps serving the primary role in the project implementation. The Army spearheaded the Bosnia peacekeeping effort. Both of these efforts were coordinated through the Department of Defense Smart Card Technology Office, and the smart cards used were interoperable The ability for one system to communicate or work with another.
