Founded in 1890, it existed in Oklahoma Territory near Indian Territory 17 years before the two became the state of Oklahoma. , under a sponsored research agreement, has filed a utility patent application with the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office for a unique swept volume 3D display system. Principal research and engineering for this technology will continue at the Stephenson Research & Technology Center on OU's Norman campus. 3DIcon owns the exclusive, worldwide rights for all commercial, government, and other applications of this new intellectual property.

"OU has made significant advances which should improve the current state-of-the-art knowledge in swept volume displays," said Philip Suomu, 3DIcon's director of technology. "One of the major innovations is that images are created without expensive lasers. OU's design also provides complete 360-degree viewing and the ability to display opaque objects and to obtain visual 'blocking.' Their full-spectrum, brilliant colors should allow this unique system to be used in many environments. We believe this is a major technological advance."
