3D TV in our homes 'in three years' TECHNOLOGY.SCIENTISTS unveiled plans yesterday for Star Wars-style 3D-TV which could project moving holograms into living rooms within three years. Researchers at Cambridge University believe the breakthrough will revolutionise television and render twodimensional sets obsolete. Project leader Dr Tim Wilkinson created the device using liquid crystals and nanotechnology. The technique takes normal two-dimensional LCDs and adds carbon nanotubes to the surface creating a 3D "cube" instead of a flat square. These nanotubes refract refract /re·fract/ (re-frakt´) 1. to cause to deviate. 2. to ascertain errors of ocular refraction. re·fract v. 1. and project the light to create holographic See holographic storage. 3D images. Dr Wilkinson said: "A 3D display like the Princess Leia hologram See holographic storage. from Star Wars is definitely possible." |
