DUBLIN, Ireland--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Dec. 9, 1999--

New European Supply Chain Integration Centre to Open as Part of

3Com's Continued Drive to Improving Overall Operational Efficiency

3Com Corporation (Nasdaq:COMS COMS 3Com Corporation (stock symbol)

) announced today a $30 million investment to create a new state-of-the-art European supply chain integration centre at its Blanchardstown site in Ireland. 3Com's plans for the new facility were disclosed by Bertie Ahern, Ireland's Prime Minister, at a ceremony today.

The new European supply chain integration centre will involve the linking together of 3Com's existing manufacturing facilities and the creation of a new 170,000 sq. ft customer order fulfilment centre to take care of all the distribution and supply chain functions. 3Com has already invested heavily in Ireland, employing over 1,000 people in Blanchardstown. An additional 250 jobs will be created over the next four years, mainly in the manufacturing operation, as the supply chain centre is fully automated.

The announcement of the new European supply chain integration centre is a further step in 3Com's ongoing commitment to improving its overall operational efficiency. Already this year 3Com has announced that it has reduced its cash-to-cash cycle - the number of days elapsed e·lapse

"Increasingly, businesses and consumers alike are moving towards buying over the World Wide Web which means that vendors must be able to respond fast to customer orders and, where possible, look for ways to offer a personalised service offering," said John McClelland John McClelland (1805–1875) was a British medical doctor with interests in geology and biology, who worked for the East India Company.

"With this new European supply chain integration centre, we will be able to fulfil online orders and set an example to other companies of how a 3Com(R) e-network can power their supply chain to enhance performance, reduce costs and provide competitive advantage."

McClelland continued, "3Com is dedicated to providing organisations of all sizes with e-networks especially suited for supporting modern e-business applications such as supply chain management. The European supply chain integration centre will handle all of 3Com's European sales orders.
