recent results of an in-depth cost-of-ownership study by The Registy Inc. (NASDAQ:REGI REGI Raptor Education Group Inc (Wisconsin) ). The study, which polled reference customers of the major switch vendors (including 3Com, Bay Networks, Cabletron Systems and Cisco), found that in particular 3Com was the leader in the areas of self-management of switches and breadth of network management functionality.

"We are very pleased with the results of the Registry study, which highlight 3Com's long-standing investment in providing intelligent, embedded agents within our wide range of high-function and boundary switches," said Deb Curtis, senior product marketing manager, 3Com Systems. "These findings show that 3Com is meeting network managers' needs for a comprehensive, agent-centric, automated network management solution, including robust management applications."

The Registry study also compared network cost of ownership differences between LAN switch A network device that cross-connects clients, servers and network devices. Also known as a "frame switch," stand-alone LAN switches are common in all Ethernet networks. A four-port switch is also typically built into a wired or wireless router for homes and small business (see wireless  management and router management. It was found that switch-based networks reduced levels of help desk support (as much as 43 percent less) and increased the time available for activities such as performance trend analysis (nearly 30 percent more time) over router infrastructures.
