3Com announces switching roadmap for LinkBuilder MSH and introduces distributed RMON; High speed links, integrated switching meet growing bandwidth requirements; New RMON functionality added.

SANTA CLARA, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--3Com Corporation, a leading supplier of network hubs, today further strengthened the switching and management power of its LinkBuilder Multi-Services Hub (MSH MSH melanocyte-stimulating hormone.

This includes an ATM-Ethernet, Fast Ethernet-Ethernet, and Token Ring switching module which join the FDDI-Ethernet switching module already available.

"We are leveraging our leadership in switching technology and SuperStack architecture to provide high performance solutions for workgroup switching in a floor distribution chassis," said Bob Finocchio finocchio: see fennel. , 3Com's executive vice president, Network Systems Operations. "Adding workgroup switching functionality in our LinkBuilder MSH hub shows that as network technologies evolve, the MSH's design easily allows users to add new technology without sacrificing their existing investment."

performance file servers and bandwidth intensive applications demand high speed links to the network. These high speed links are the critical complement to Ethernet switching which dramatically increases segmentation and the bandwidth available to end users without the added time or cost of changing end station adapters. LinkSwitch modules for the MSH deliver this combination with a choice of FDDI (Fiber Distributed Data Interface) Often pronounced "fiddy," it was a LAN and MAN access method that had its heyday in the mid-1990s. FDDI was an ANSI standard token passing network that transmitted 100 Mbps over optical fiber up to 10 kilometers. , Fast Ethernet or ATM as the high speed link. Together with 3Com's LANplex industry leading LANplex backbone switches, these products deliver building and workgroup solutions within 3Com's High Performance Scalable Networking (HPSN HPSN Hot-Pressed Silicon Nitride

) architecture.

The new products will include: Switched ATM to 10Mbps Ethernet LinkSwitch module for the LinkBuilder MSH hub. This module integrates Ethernet LANs into an ATM infrastructure which is ideal for building and campus backbones in organizations that need high performance, scalable bandwidth. The product will support the ATM Forum's standard LAN emulation and virtual LANs across the enterprise. This module is expected to be available in the second half of 1995 and, as previously announced, migrates the technology from the LinkSwitch 2700 SuperStack product into the MSH.

Switched Fast Ethernet to 10Mbps Ethernet LinkSwitch module. The module for the LinkBuilder MSH provides microsegmentation on the floor at an affordable price. The product is ideal for power users on dedicated 10 Mbps Ethernet LANs with 100 Mbps Fast Ethernet bandwidth for local servers or to server farms via backbone switches such as 3Com's LANplex switching products. With the MSH hub, customers can flexibly combine repeating and switching in the chassis, installing multiple switching modules in a single LinkBuilder MSH chassis. This LinkSwitch module is expected to be available in the first half of 1996.

Switched Token Ring LinkSwitch module will deliver increased manageability and bandwidth in IBM (International Business Machines Corporation, Armonk, NY, www.ibm.com) The world's largest computer company. IBM's product lines include the S/390 mainframes (zSeries), AS/400 midrange business systems (iSeries), RS/6000 workstations and servers (pSeries), Intel-based servers (xSeries)  Token Ring environments. The LinkSwitch TR module for the LinkBuilder MSH hub is expected to be available in the second half of 1996. 3Com will deliver each of these products in SuperStack family as well as in the LinkBuilder MSH hub.

Free Ethernet RMON (Remote MONitoring) Enhancements to the management information base (MIB) structure used by the simple network management protocol (SNMP). In 1991, RMON added comprehensive network monitoring capabilities.  upgrade to all LinkBuilder MSH Customers

Transcend RMON in the LinkBuilder MSH will deliver Ethernet remote monitoring (RMON) simultaneously on all Ethernet segments through the MSH's Distributed Management Architecture. SmartAgents and custom ASICs on each connectivity module collect and compile RMON data to implement RMON without additional costly processors or hardware upgrades.

Typical RMON implementations, in addition to requiring costly hardware probes, can only monitor one segment at a time. Distributed RMON lets network managers see network trends instantly. Because Transcend RMON is integrated within the hub, actions due to RMON events can be implemented immediately by the chassis without the need to send management data to the management station and receive a reply.

3Com will offer Ethernet RMON free of charge to all LinkBuilder MHS (1) (Message Handling Service) An earlier messaging system from Novell that supported multiple operating systems and other messaging protocols, including SMTP, SNADS and X.400. It used the SMF-71 messaging format.  and LinkBuilder FMS FMS - Flexible Manufacturing System (factory automation).  customers. This functionality will also be available as a free software upgrade to existing customers. Competitive hub vendors charge premium prices to implement RMON.

Today, the LinkBuilder MSH supports Ethernet RMON events and alarms with support for all nine Ethernet RMON groups available in the second quarter of 1995. Distributed RMON support will be available in the third quarter of 1995. All LinkSwitch modules for the LinkBuilder MSH are managed by Transcend Enterprise Manager for the most popular network management platforms including Microsoft Windows, Hewlett-Packard's OpenView, IBM's NetView for AIX (Advanced Interactive eXecutive) IBM's Unix-based operating system which runs on its Intellistation workstations and pSeries, p5, iSeries and i5 server families.  and SunNet Manager. The new LinkSwitch modules for the LinkBuilder MSH chassis will be marketed through 3Com's worldwide distribution channels, including systems integrators, VARs, distributors, national dealers and resellers, OEMs and direct sales.
