The solution enables SLA providers (including IT departments and service providers) to optimize the performance of their enterprise information infrastructure (the network, systems and applications) based on their business objectives to provide an increased level of service to the end user.

business needs and to deliver policy-based adaptive networking. TranscendWare software enables the network to give individual users and applications their contracted level of service. 3Com's service level agreement products support the ability to set, manage and enforce network policies.

Beginning in June 3Com will sell the InfoVista system 1.0, which will feature pre-defined reports created jointly by 3Com and InfoVista to enhance the business management of 3Com's broad range of LAN (Local Area Network) A communications network that serves users within a confined geographical area. The "clients" are the user's workstations typically running Windows, although Mac and Linux clients are also used.  and WAN systems. In addition, the solution, which is based on industry standards, will work in multi-vendor environments, creating an SLA solution that will work industry-wide.

SLAs: A Market Need

Information Technology (IT) departments are increasingly being repositioned within their organizations as an internal vendor that provides network solutions to the organization. The IT departments are required to define service level agreements, which are the contracts between the IT department and the groups for whom they provide services, or between service providers and IT management. An SLA specifies a set of target metrics that IT commits to meet or exceed. For example, typical metrics include network uptime, application availability, and network and application response time. Beyond just providing a way to measure the performance of the department, SLAs present the opportunity for IT professionals to convey the value they are delivering to their organization for the money spent.

"3Com is leading the trend of bringing networking beyond just scaling the performance and extending the reach of the network, and moving toward policy-based management See policy management. ," said Roy Johnson

, vice president and general manager of 3Com. "Enabling service level agreements is a tremendous step in that direction. InfoVista is the perfect SLA conformance reporting tool to integrate into 3Com's total network management solution."

"Our partnership with 3Com further delivers on our mission to offer organizations a real competitive advantage to efficiently manage their SLAs," said Alain Ries, CEO (1) (Chief Executive Officer) The highest individual in command of an organization. "Organizations will now be able to take full advantage of all data within the enterprise, including networks, applications and systems to set up comprehensive metrics and create meaningful high-level reports."

"Based on findings in a recent Registry study, 3Com customers are taking full advantage of the embedded Inserted into. "This has placed 3Com in a unique position to lead the market in providing enterprise-wide SLA management."

SLA Management: Data Collection, Reporting and Enforcement

An effective SLA solution requires three components to be implemented: comprehensive, enterprise-wide data collection; measurement and intuitive reporting; and the ability to enforce the determined SLAs. 3Com's solution meets these critical requirements. Data Collection: 3Com offers the industry's most comprehensive data collection solution. 3Com's distributed remote monitoring (protocol) remote monitoring - (RMON) A network management protocol that allows network information to be gathered at a single computer. Whereas SNMP gathers network data from a single type of Management Information Base (MIB), RMON 1 defines nine additional MIBs that provide a  (dRMON) technology provides enterprise-wide, RMON (Remote MONitoring) Enhancements to the management information base (MIB) structure used by the simple network management protocol (SNMP). Data are passed from SNMP agents, which are hardware and/or software processes reporting activity in each network device (hub, router, bridge, etc.  and enterprise MIB (1) (Management Information Base) The hierarchical database used by the simple network management protocol (SNMP) to describe the particular device being monitored. Additionally, 3Com's TranscendWare network management applications (Transcend Enterprise Manager, Transcend Traffix Manager, and Transcend LANsentry Manager) provide visualization and reporting on the health and status of the network and the applications running on it.

Reporting and Measuring: 3Com has partnered with InfoVista Corporation to provide a best-in-class SLA conformance management system. The InfoVista system can tap into all of 3Com's collected data, as well as multi-vendor data sources, to provide a single view across networks, servers and applications. The software consolidates and measures historical and real-time information to efficiently manage quality of service and service level agreements. The reports within InfoVista identify if, when and where service level agreement targets are being achieved. InfoVista software's flexible reporting includes exception reports, summary reports, detail reports, as well as customized reports. InfoVista also provides Web access to all reports.

Enforcement: 3Com will assist IT organizations and service providers with making an SLA enforceable by leveraging the policy-based management capabilities within TranscendWare software. These capabilities allow an SLA provider to set up and implement underlying policies in the network to meet the SLA metric objectives. Pricing and Availability

InfoVista 1.0 is shipping now for $19,995US. 3Com will sell InfoVista 1.0 in June, featuring an updated set of reports and full service and support from 3Com. About Transcend Networking Framework and TranscendWare Software

Transcend Networking is 3Coms three-part framework for: (1) Scaling Performance of the campus LAN; (2) Extending the Reach to remote sites and users on the WAN; and (3) Managing the Growth of enterprise networks. The framework specifies ways to construct networks that are easy-to-use, or "transparent" to users, as well as simpler and more cost effective to design and manage. TranscendWare modules are the software that powers the Transcend Networking framework.
