"After looking at the Gigabit Ethernet offerings from Cisco and Enterasys, we decided that 3Com's copper-capable Gigabit Ethernet solution gave us the best performance and value for delivering our GPS system to the desktop and other key business systems across our two-building campus," said Anthony Holden Anthony Holden (born 22 May 1947) is a British journalist, broadcaster and writer, particularly known as a biographer of the British Royal family and of artists including Shakespeare, Tchaikovsky, Lorenzo da Ponte and Laurence Olivier. , senior data communications analyst (job) data communications analyst - A person who installs, maintains, and troubleshoots data networks. "The 3Com system's scalability and versatile switching capacity also supports our plans to automate our call center and to link our regional facilities with network-based videoconferencing A real time video session between two or more users or between two or more locations. Although the first videoconferencing was done with traditional analog TV and satellites, inhouse room systems became popular in the early 1980s after Compression Labs pioneered digitized video systems ."

Renowned for its plug-and-play setup and simple Web management, 3Com Gigabit Ethernet switching products deliver high performance for corporate, healthcare and educational customers. The 3Com Switch 4005, which Jevic selected for its network core, provides a robust, affordable Gigabit backbone with Layer 3 switching capabilities for intelligent routing of bandwidth-intensive multimedia traffic. The SuperStack 3 Switch 4900s and SuperStack 3 Switch 3300s deliver Gigabit Ethernet over copper connections to Jevic's servers and desktops. 3Com 10/100/1000 PCI-X (PCI eXtended) An enhanced PCI bus technology originally developed by IBM, HP and Compaq that is backward compatible with existing PCI cards. PCI and 32-bit PCI-X slots are physically the same, and PCI cards can plug into PCI-X slots.  Server Network Interface Cards (NICs) will power Jevic's servers, completing the 3Com solution's end-to-end, high-speed connectivity.

End-to-End Reliability

Jevic's decision to deploy its 3Com network solution in its 600-employee headquarters emanated from the firm's desire to enhance its customer service applications. Chief among these are the Qualcomm GPS radar screens Jevic call center personnel use to locate cargo in transit and give real-time shipping status to customers calling on the phone. The network will also speed data from Jevic's detailed cargo tracking system to its Web servers in response to online queries from customers.

3Com systems will additionally distribute Jevic's other key business applications, including its Comdata fuel management systems, Informix scheduling and billing databases, ADP (1) (Automatic Data Processing) Synonymous with data processing (DP), electronic data processing (EDP) and information processing.

The firm will also rely on its 3Com solution as it begins automating its call center and testing a new videoconferencing system.

"Our industry is service driven, and we need to differentiate ourselves with the details to stay competitive," said Holden. "Using 3Com Gigabit Ethernet systems for our core and desktop connections, we now have the scalable bandwidth to exceed our customers' expectations now and for many years to come."
