, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--March 6, 1995--3Com Corporation, the worldwide leader in stackable hubs and data center backbone LAN switching
''This article addresses packet switching in computer networks.

LAN switching is a form of packet switching used in local area networks. Switching technologies are crucial to network design, or to that minority of LANs that are used outside the home.
, today boosted its growing workgroup switching product offerings by introducing the new LinkSwitch 500, a low cost workgroup Ethernet switch A device that connects clients and servers to each other in an Ethernet network. See switched Ethernet.  for 3Com's SuperStack family that delivers full Ethernet wire speed per port.

The LinkSwitch 500 combines the simplicity of SuperStack with a breakthrough entry price of less than $4,000 to increase the performance of shared and dedicated LAN segments and provide increased bandwidth for current SuperStack users.

Dataquest, 3Com is the leader in data center backbone switching with 43 percent of the market. Dataquest also lists 3Com as the market leader in stackable hubs with 20.2 percent of the market.

The LinkSwitch 500 joins 3Com's family of workgroup switches which includes the popular LinkSwitch 1200 (Ethernet/FDDI) for SuperStack, the LANplex 2500 (Ethernet/FDDI) and the LANplex 2016 (Ethernet) for collapsed backbone A network configuration that provides a backbone in a centralized location, to which all subnetworks are attached. A collapsed backbone is implemented in a router or switch that uses a high-speed backplane that can handle the simultaneous traffic of all or most of its ports at full wire  and workgroup environments. These products give 3Com quality solutions to offer the rapidly growing market for workgroup switching, estimated by Dataquest at $218 million in 1994.

With a low price of less than $400 per port, the LinkSwitch 500 is a cost-effective, high performance switch ideal for SuperStack, the industry's leading stackable environment. Users can add the LinkSwitch 500 to any SuperStack hub system for increased bandwidth and high speed connections.

The LinkSwitch 500

The LinkSwitch 500 is a plug-and-play, 10-port Ethernet workgroup switch that is highly flexible and easy to configure. The LinkSwitch 500's ASIC-based Ethernet switching features fast cut-through mode for high performance. In addition, the LinkSwitch 500 features SNMP (Simple Network Management Protocol) A widely used network monitoring and control protocol. Data are passed from SNMP agents, which are hardware and/or software processes reporting activity in each network device (hub, router, bridge, etc.  management and full support for 3Com Transcend network management applications.

The LinkSwitch 500 provides full 10 Mbps wire-speed switching on all ports and takes advantage of 3Com's SuperStack form factor for plug-and-play, redundancy/reliability and integration with other 3Com products.

"The high performance and low entry price of the LinkSwitch 500, combined with our established worldwide channels, gives 3Com strong products to offer the expanding workgroup switching market," said Bob Finocchio finocchio: see fennel. , 3Com's executive vice president, Network Systems Operations. "This product is a natural fit for our large installed base of stackable systems. We believe customers will embrace 3Com's workgroup switching solutions in the same way they have our backbone switches and stackable hubs. Plus, we've given our strong distribution channel an ideal solution to provide high performance, low cost workgroup switching."

"3Com is leveraging its expertise and leadership in data center switching and stackable hubs to develop excellent stackable switching solutions for workgroup environments," said Art Jefford, LAN/WAN LAN/WAN Local Area Network/Wide Area Network  network consultant, Resource Electronics, Columbia, SC. "We believe our customers will be very excited about the LinkSwitch 500, especially its low entry price."

The LinkSwitch 500 is part of 3Com's SuperStack system, the first fault-tolerant stackable system for the workgroup and remote office. SuperStack integrates best-of-class networking products, including routers, hubs, and switches into stackable systems for Ethernet, Token Ring, and high speed environments (including FDDI (Fiber Distributed Data Interface) Often pronounced "fiddy," it was a LAN and MAN access method that had its heyday in the mid-1990s. FDDI was an ANSI standard token passing network that transmitted 100 Mbps over optical fiber up to 10 kilometers. , 100BaseT, Ethernet and ATM), managed with Transcend network management. Ethernet switching for SuperStack increases bandwidth and provides added flexibility, simplicity and performance.

A Fully Managed Solution

The LinkSwitch 500 provides a full set of comprehensive management features including in-band and out-of-band SNMP management for remote management of any network station. Full per-port statistics gathering lets network administrators analyze network traffic and provides an additional measure of control. The LinkSwitch 500 supports as many as 8192 entries in the forwarding address table in mid-size to large network environments.

In addition, the LinkSwitch 500 is managed by Transcend network management. The LinkSwitch 500 further reduces the complexity of network adds, moves and changes by decreasing the number of subnets required within a typical corporate network infrastructure.

Pricing and Availability

The LinkSwitch 500 carries a U.S. list price of $3,995 and is available immediately. The LinkSwitch 500 is available through 3Com's worldwide distribution channels, including VARs, resellers, distributors and direct sales. For information, contact 3Com at 800/NET-3COM or 408/764-5000.
