New 3Com Gigabit Offerings Give Customers More Options

to Scale and Help Future-Proof Their Networks,

and Meet Requirements for Core and Workgroup Applications

3Com Corporation (Nasdaq: COMS COMS 3Com Corporation (stock symbol)

High-end network switches and routers are often built with a modular chassis. The "clients" are the user's workstations typically running Windows, although Mac and Linux clients are also used.  business infrastructures. IT managers will be able to use a new Switch 7700 4-slot chassis to add modularity for enterprise workgroup aggregation or as a small network core. They can also deploy new 20-port Gigabit modules across the range of the Switch 7700 family, effectively more than doubling the Gigabit port density of these switches for enterprise applications.

"The decreasing prices of standards-based Gigabit Ethernet An Ethernet standard that transmits at 1 Gbps. Used mostly to connect high-end workstations and servers as well as for network backbones, Gigabit Ethernet transmits full duplex from point to point using switches and half duplex in a shared environment (CSMA/CD) using a hub.  products are making it more affordable for an increasing number of businesses to deploy Gigabit to the edge of the network," said Joshua Johnson Not to be confused with Joshua J. "What's more, customers can choose between high-performance modular chassis-based and stackable-based Gigabit LAN switches A network device that cross-connects clients, servers and network devices. Also known as a "frame switch," stand-alone LAN switches are common in all Ethernet networks. A four-port switch is also typically built into a wired or wireless router for homes and small business (see wireless , affording them more options to future-proof their networks from the core to the wiring closet The central distribution or servicing point for cables in a network. New 3Com Gigabit Ethernet Products Increase IT Decision-makers' Options

The new 3Com Switch 7700 4-slot chassis gives enterprise customers the option of having a high-performance chassis switch for workgroup aggregation, while the new 20-port Gigabit modules scale switch port density of the entire Switch 7700 family. Mid-sized enterprises can also use the Switch 7700 4-slot chassis as a small building core switch and, as the business grows into a larger-sized enterprise, scale the network with 3Com's higher-end Switch 7700s, including the enterprise-level, 8-slot redundant model, for secure, converged networks The integration of the telephone system with IP-based data networks. See softswitch.

. IT managers will have a better balance between advanced features and the cost of smaller building cores.

The Switch 7700 4-slot chassis has a single switch fabric slot and three slots for switch modules. Its innovative design allows for a 4-port sub-module on the switch fabric, a less-expensive option for adding a small number of fiber or copper Gigabit uplinks without taking up a full module slot. Total capacity is 64 Gigabit ports or 144 10/100 ports. 3Com offers two 20-port Gigabit modules for the Switch 7700 family. The first is a 1000BASE-T (10/100/1000) 20-port module for copper Gigabit connections. Also available is a 1000BASE-X (SFP SFP Small Form-factor Pluggable (optical transceiver module)

Pricing and Availability

The Switch 7700 4-slot Starter Kit, with chassis, power supply, fan tray and switch fabric, is priced at $14,995 (US list) and expected to ship in May 2004. The 20-port modules are priced at $3,995 (US list) for the 1000BASE-T version and $7,995 (US list) for the 1000BASE-X (SFP) version. The modules are also expected to ship in May. SFP modules are purchased separately.
