3Com Follows OnStream Acquisition by Introducing its Newest ATM Access Products Aimed at Small-Offices and Remote Sites; First ATM Access Product with Standards-Based ATM Inverse Multiplexing Available for Under $10,000.

SANTA CLARA Santa Clara, city, Cuba
Santa Clara (sän`tä klä`rä), city (1994 est. pop. 217,000), capital of Villa Clara prov., central Cuba.
, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Nov. 11, 1996--Global data networking leader 3Com Corporation (Nasdaq:COMS COMS 3Com Corporation (stock symbol)

) today introduced two new ATM wide-area network (WAN) access products for service providers and enterprise users.

The new AccessBuilder 9300 and AccessBuilder 9010 ATM access systems provide users an industry-leading solution for accessing high-speed Internet See broadband.  services and ATM public/private networks from small offices and remote sites. Introducing these products demonstrates 3Com's ability to quickly leverage innovative technologies and products from its recent acquisition of OnStream Networks OnStream Networks was a Santa Clara, California-based supplier of Circuit Emulation Service (CES) based Asynchronous Transfer Mode (ATM) solutions.

They used the AAL1gator designed by Network Synthesis and acquired by Integrated Telecom Technology (later acquired by
and deliver solutions for its customers. It also underscores the company's commitment to offering a broad portfolio of cost-effective, open, standards-based systems.

The new small-office ATM access products integrate users' legacy data, voice and video communications and adapt the traffic to ATM for cost-effective WAN transport over T1 and nxT1 Inverse Multiplexing for ATM IMA (Inverse Multiplexing for ATM) is a technology used to transport ATM traffic over a bundle of T1 or E1 cables, also known as IMA Group. This allows for gradual increase in line capacity, where implementing a high-capacity solution (e.g.  (IMA (Interactive Multimedia Association, Annapolis, MD) An earlier trade association founded in 1988 originally as the Interactive Video Industry Association. It provided an open process for adopting existing technologies and was involved in subjects such as networked services, scripting ) services. They provide higher capacity, more advanced traffic management, and lower price points than other access products available today.

They complement 3Com's AccessBuilder 9600 enterprise ATM access multiplexer (formerly known as the OnStream CS600), in operation today in major ISP (1) See in-system programmable.

The new ATM access systems join 3Com's existing WAN systems families -- NETBuilder, OfficeConnect Remote, 3ComImpact, and other AccessBuilder products -- to provide comprehensive wide area access solutions for a variety of customer applications. All of 3Com's access systems address customer needs for Extending the Reach of networks and are essential to the company's Transcend Networking framework for building and managing networks.

"3Com now offers the most sophisticated and broadest range of low-speed ATM access solutions on the market today," said James Mongiello, vice president and general manager of 3Com's Broadband Access See broadband and wireless broadband.  Division. "Our ATM access products in use today have demonstrated they can help service providers and enterprise users get the most out of their ATM networks. The new ATM access products extend these benefits to remote office users who need higher speed, more affordable access to Internet and NSP services. With our industry-leading ATM Forum A membership organization founded in 1991 to promote ATM networking technology. It worked with ANSI and the ITU to set standards. Its first specification in 1992 defined the User-Network Interface (UNI). In 2004, the Forum merged with the MPLS and Frame Relay Alliance.  IMA-standard support and traffic management, we provide customers the lowest cost of ownership solution for ATM public and enterprise networks," said Mongiello.

Reaching Out to Remote and Small Branch Offices and Frame Relay A high-speed packet switching protocol used in wide area networks (WANs). Providing a granular service of up to DS3 speed (45 Mbps), it has become popular for LAN to LAN connections across remote distances, and services are offered by most major carriers.  Users

The AccessBuilder 9300 system is the first ATM access platform to meet the unique requirements of small sites and branch offices at a very low price. The product provides a seamless and affordable growth path to ATM services for frame and packet users, or any user with T1 or greater than T1 bandwidth needs.

For under $10,000, it offers a built-in industry-standard IMA interface (supporting as many as four bundled T1s), a serial data interface supporting frame relay and IBM/SDLC traffic, an Ethernet interface and sophisticated traffic management. The product will be offered in a stackable design, fitting into 3Com's SuperStack II architecture.

The AccessBuilder 9300 remote office ATM access platform offers three expansion slots for increased applications and services flexibility. These can be used to support additional applications such as OC-3 ATM connections to local ATM switches, constant-bit-rate (CBR (1) (Computer-Based Reference) Reference materials accessible by computer in order to help people do their jobs quicker. For example, this database on disk!

) voice communications, video, and other data traffic, such as 100Base-T or switched Ethernet. Users can begin with a single T1 connection and expand to four T1 links, using the product's IMA capabilities, simply by adding low-cost, plug-in modules.

The new AccessBuilder 9010 product extends low-cost ATM access concentration to even smaller remote sites that may only have T1 bandwidth requirements, but want to migrate to ATM to reduce the expense of maintaining separate voice, data, or frame relay networks. The product's data features include support for frame relay to ATM interworking (standard) interworking - Systems or components, possibly from different origins, working together to perform some task. Interworking depends crucially on standards to define the interfaces between the components.  via RS-449, V.35 and native-speed Ethernet communications.

Like 3Com's AccessBuilder 9600 enterprise ATM platform, both the AccessBuilder 9300 and the AccessBuilder 9010 solutions support CBR traffic for voice and video applications. Both products offer the same advanced voice features as the AccessBuilder 9600 ATM access platform, including routing of individual DS0s, PBX (Private Branch eXchange) An inhouse telephone switching system that interconnects telephone extensions to each other as well as to the outside telephone network (PSTN).  notification should problems arise in the ATM network, and dynamic bandwidth reallocation Noun 1. reallocation - a share that has been allocated again

Sophisticated Traffic and Network Management

The AccessBuilder 9600's traffic management capabilities, recognized as the most advanced in the industry, have been leveraged across 3Com's ATM access family. The traffic management software helps optimize bandwidth while preventing congestion The condition of a network when there is not enough bandwidth to support the current traffic load.

Deep buffers, per virtual circuit traffic shaping, early packet discard and bandwidth optimization features help service providers meet required qualities of service and provide the highest level of reliability for multiple services.

The AccessBuilder 9300 and 9010 also support sophisticated network management capabilities. Customers have the flexibility to perform comprehensive configuration, performance, accounting and security management from any SNMP-based workstation.

Pricing and Availability

The AccessBuilder 9300 remote office ATM system with standard IMA, serial data and Ethernet capabilities starts at $9,950 and will be available in the first calendar quarter of 1997. The AccessBuilder 9010 product is $5,950, which includes an Ethernet and serial data interface. It will also be available in the first calendar quarter of 1997.
