solution that breaks the price barrier for implementation of this high speed technology. The only leading vendor to offer a complete end-to-end Fast Ethernet solution, 3Com has lowered the per-user price of a Fast Ethernet workgroup connection to less than $400. The company offers its 10/100BASE-T adapter at less than $200, and the per-port price of its hub and Ethernet-to-Fast Ethernet switch A device that connects clients and servers to each other in an Ethernet network. See switched Ethernet.  at less than $200.

"3Com was one of the first networking vendors to announce its commitment to Fast Ethernet, and since then has played a major role in the development and adoption of this technology," said Doug Spreng, vice president and general manager of 3Com's Network Adapter A printed circuit board that plugs into the bus of both user machines (clients) and servers in a local area network (LAN). Also commonly called a "network interface card" (NIC) or "LAN card," the network adapter transmits data onto the network and receives data from the network.  Division. "This pricing strategy will allow for faster adoption by the broad marketplace, benefiting both the end user and our industry."

3Com is the only leading vendor to offer a complete end-to-end Fast Ethernet solution. 3Com's Fast Ethernet workgroup solution includes the Fast EtherLink adapters, LinkBuilder FMS FMS - Flexible Manufacturing System (factory automation).  100 hub and LinkSwitch 1000 switch. The Fast Ethernet modules for 3Com's NETBuilder II router complete the end-to-end solution by providing connectivity to other LAN (Local Area Network) A communications network that serves users within a confined geographical area. The "clients" are the user's workstations typically running Windows, although Mac and Linux clients are also used.  technologies as well as the WAN. By offering all the components, 3Com ensures total interoperability and compatibility. The entire 3Com Fast Ethernet solution is easily managed by the company's Transcend Network Management.

adapter, $195 per single adapter in a 20 pack (the typical purchase quantity in today's volume market) offers the industry's best performance through Parallel Tasking, 3Com's patented performance technology that has made the company's Ethernet adapters market leaders. The auto-sensing 10/100 RJ-45 connector allows MIS managers to install the adapter now to "future- proof" their high performance PCs; operate at 10Mbps now and then easily migrate to 100Mbps automatically without any disruption at the desktop.

The LinkBuilder FMS 100 hub, at $199 per port, is part of 3Com's industry-leading SuperStack family. The hub will provide the flexibility and simplicity of 10BASE-T at 100BASE-T speeds and will be available this summer.

Announced earlier this month, 3Com's LinkSwitch 1000 Ethernet-to- Fast-Ethernet switch, at $199 per port, enables users to efficiently and cost-effectively leverage both 10BASE-T and 100BASE-T. The LinkSwitch 1000 integrates the benefits of Ethernet switching with the 100Mbps peak throughput advantages of Fast Ethernet for existing PCs as well as servers and new workstations.

A Fast Start to Fast Ethernet

To provide users with a cost-effective and easy implementation path to Fast Ethernet, 3Com developed the FastStart program. With FastStart, end users receive a free LinkBuilder FMS 100 12-port hub with the purchase of 30 or more Fast EtherLink 10/100 adapters -- further lowering the cost of the Fast Ethernet workgroup by more than 25 percent.

3Com also offers a special trade-up program that allows network users to trade in any competitors' hubs or adapters in exchange for new 3Com hubs, adapters or cash. 3Com's Fast Ethernet solutions are included in the trade-up program.

All 3Com Fast Ethernet products are available through the company's worldwide distribution channel.

Founded in 1979, 3Com Corporation (NASDAQ;COMS) pioneered the data networking industry. Today, 3Com offers customers a broad range of ISO (1) See ISO speed.
