3Com Delivers ADSL Modem Solutions to Hanaro Telecom; Korean DSL Service Provider to Deploy 50,000 3Com HomeConnect ADSL Internal Modems.

SANTA CLARA, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Dec. 14, 1999--

3Com Corporation (Nasdaq: COMS COMS 3Com Corporation (stock symbol)

) confirmed today that it has been selected to deliver ADSL See DSL.

The Telecommunications Act of 1996 allowed competition to the incumbent telcos (ILECs), enabling new companies (CLECs)  sanctioned to offer ADSL service in Korea. Recently, the first shipment of 3Com(R) HomeConnect(TM) ADSL modems - part of an overall 50,000-unit order - were delivered to Hanaro Telecom.

Today's announcement underscores the value of interoperability among CPE (Customer Premises Equipment) Communications equipment that resides on the customer's premises.

deployments forced customers to accept CPE modems without any choice. 3Com's ADSL modems - which are interoperable with a wide variety of DSLAMs around the world - will now provide consumers with alternatives.

"As a long-standing champion of standards-based products and services, 3Com is proud to have been selected by Hanaro Telecom," said Jerry Devlin, vice president and general manager for 3Com's Personal Communications Division. "Consumers have been anxiously awaiting deployment of broadband products and services - but they've been hindered by proprietary solutions. Fortunately, that's no longer the case for Hanaro Telecom customers."

Hanaro Telecom is expected to deploy a total of 90,000 ADSL service lines in the coming months. Those consumers who sign up for ADSL service will enjoy a dedicated, always-on connection to the Internet. Since DSL uses conventional telephone wires and usually requires no additional wiring to the customer, users can be up and running in no time.

"ADSL service is one of the key initiatives of Hanaro Telecom to offer our customers the most advanced and fastest Internet access," said Mr. Seung Seog Lee, Wired Network Planning Director at Hanaro. "3Com demonstrated its responsiveness to our needs, product quality and reliability in the two-week-long benchmark testing process and, thus, was selected."

This internal ADSL modem from 3Com supports both full-rate and the G.lite ADSL standards. That means the 3Com ADSL Modem PCI can achieve downstream access speeds up to 8 Mbps (megabits per second (unit) megabits per second - (Mbps, Mb/s) Millions of bits per second. A unit of data rate. 1 Mb/s = 1,000,000 bits per second (not 1,048,576).

), for lightning-fast Internet connections. The "always-on" nature of ADSL eliminates the hassles commonly associated with traditional, dial-up access technologies. In addition, its Instant Update feature protects users' investments: when modem upgrades are made available, they are easily and quickly downloaded. Instant Update is also the key to changing download speeds - ISPs will be able to send the appropriate code, with no user intervention required.
