market and drive the widespread adoption of 3Com's DynamicAccess software that optimizes network performance and control. 3Com also announced today the availability of new DynamicAccess features that can be downloaded from the 3Com website, free of charge.

3Com's DynamicAccess features bring intelligence to the edge of the network by making network interface cards (NICs) active network components that dynamically interact with switches and make NICs a critical component of the network system infrastructure. Newly released features include PACE technology; dRMON-optimized drivers; new, easy to use, Windows-based installation and diagnostic software; and expanded software driver support for unmatched compatibility with standard operating systems Operating systems can be categorized by technology, ownership, licensing, working state, usage, and by many other characteristics. In practice, many of these groupings may overlap. .

"Competitors simply offer network adapters. 3Com offers a network connection and an integral part of a networking system that is future-proofed with an ongoing stream of DynamicAccess software releases," said Doug Spreng, executive vice president of 3Com's Interface Products. "3Com's award-winning products are only the foundation of our value proposition. On this foundation we've built additional value through the DynamicAccess suite of features, our unique software that lets network managers manage and improve network performance."

New DynamicAccess Software Innovations

This software release of DynamicAccess suite of features includes new PACE technology-enabled drivers offering class of service capabilities that prioritize multimedia and critical business applications. This release also includes new drivers optimized for upcoming desktop Distributed RMON (Remote MONitoring) Enhancements to the management information base (MIB) structure used by the simple network management protocol (SNMP). In 1991, RMON added comprehensive network monitoring capabilities.  (dRMON) software.

Future DynamicAccess software releases will include Fast IP, dRMON and IEEE 802.1p IEEE 802.1p is a standard that provides traffic class expediting and dynamic multicast filtering. Essentially, it provides a mechanism for implementing Quality of Service (QoS) at the MAC (Media Access Control) level.  Multicast Control. Initiated from an end system via DynamicAccess software, Fast IP will improve performance by up to 500 percent, compared to traditional routed networks, at a fraction of the cost. Fast IP is 3Com's IP switching Switching TCP/IP packets at high speed. Ipsilon's IP Switch started the trend and various vendors followed suit with different approaches, including Cisco's tag switching and 3Com's Fast IP. The goal was to switch IP packets faster than traditional router-based layer 3 forwarding.  technology. In January 3Com announced the first end-to-end IP switching solution that can be implemented in conjunction with IBM (International Business Machines Corporation, Armonk, NY, www.ibm.com) The world's largest computer company. IBM's product lines include the S/390 mainframes (zSeries), AS/400 midrange business systems (iSeries), RS/6000 workstations and servers (pSeries), Intel-based servers (xSeries)  and Cascade. Desktop dRMON leverages NICs to enhance RMON coverage in switched and 100 Mbs environments. With IEEE 802.1p Multicast Control drivers, 3Com NICs will dynamically communicate with switches to minimize multicast flooding.

Price Reduction Information

New prices for the Fast EtherLink XL 10/100 PCI network interface card are available for as low as $94.00 in 100 packs. Single units as well as five, twenty, sixty, and one hundred-packs are available through 3Com's worldwide channel partners.

3Com Builds Lead in Rapidly Growing Market

According to the Dell'Oro Group, 3Com Corporation is the leader in Fast Ethernet 10/100 NIC shipments during the first nine months of 1996. In the third quarter of 1996, 3Com surpassed Intel in shipments by 36%. 3Com shipped approximately 625,000 Fast Ethernet NICs
