to the ISPCON ISPCON Internet Service Provider Convention (The Golden Group, Inc.)  Fall '99 conference in San Jose, Benhamou said that service providers will have to meet growing consumer demand for wireless access to the Internet and corporate LANs beyond the office and the home.

"Service providers will have to add significantly more wireless services, not as a supplement to, but as an integrated part of users' connected lifestyle," Benhamou said. "Mobile access to information is quickly becoming a requirement for many users, and service providers will need to accommodate this personal and professional shift."

In addition to benefiting from increased demand for mobile access, service providers also stand to gain from the trend toward enterprise outsourcing of network services and the availability of complete solutions bundled from separate vendors. Service providers that initially focused on providing only traditional Internet access See how to access the Internet.  are now offering enterprises services that deliver a higher level of connectivity and management of network traffic.

"Since more complete offerings are now available, more organizations, especially the small-to-medium enterprises, are outsourcing their IT infrastructures to service providers," Benhamou said. "And this is only a stepping stone on the way to full end-to-end offerings that will include management of an enterprise's converged network and desktop applications."

Under this evolving landscape, a new business model based on jointly provided offerings that deliver a multitude of enterprise solutions has become more effective. During his address, Benhamou highlighted today's announcement that 3Com and Concentric Network Corp. had formed a strategic alliance to deliver bundled Digital Subscriber Line See DSL.

"Today's small and mid-size business owners have increasing time pressures, and are therefore highly receptive to tools and bundled solutions that make their jobs easier," Nothhaft said. "Concentric Network and 3Com together bring a one stop high-speed DSL solution ideal for small to medium size enterprises."
