), a leading provider of carrier-class enhanced data systems, today introduced new card set options for its industry-leading Total Control(R) 1000 multiservice access platform. The new Total Control 1000 enhanced data system card sets increase port density, enhance performance and expand the service capabilities of 3Com's flagship platform. The Total Control 1000 enhanced data system's new universal DSP (1) (Digital Signal Processor) A special-purpose CPU used for digital signal processing applications (see definition #2 below). It provides ultra-fast instruction sequences, such as shift and add, and multiply and add, which are commonly used in math-intensive  card set features four-times the call handling of current card sets and multiple interface options including DS3 and STM-0 to support the continuous subscriber growth many carriers and service providers are experiencing worldwide.

"The Total Control 1000 enhanced data system leverages the reliability and quality of our award-winning multiservice platform and scales it to meet and exceed the high subscriber demand our industry is experiencing today" said Irfan Ali Irfan Ali is founder and President of . HRCSJP Pakistan is an independent organization, which was established in 2000 by Mr. Irfan Ali with a governing body of 11 members. , Senior Vice President and General Manager, 3Com Carrier Networks Business. "3Com Total Control platforms enable value-added features such as multicast, IPSec, class-of-service and virtual private networking that empower differentiated product offerings to support our customers' continued success."

3Com will begin demonstrating a variety of new Total Control 1000 enhanced data system card sets today at Supercomm booth #3807 in the Georgia World Congress Center The Georgia World Congress Center or GWCC is the major convention center in Atlanta. It is the fourth-largest convention center in the United States at 1.4 million ft2 (130,000 m2) and hosts more than a million visitors each year.  including:

Additional system features and services enabled by Total Control 1000 enhanced data system card sets include:

-- subscriber aggregation services that include unique virtual routers, tunnel switching, tunnel concentration and encryption support;

-- IPSec service packs that offer wire-speed triple-DES encryption and key handling services for use in either dial-access or subscriber aggregation services;

-- STM-0 fiber-based line cards for TDM aggregation into the system; and

-- 1:1 redundancy options for DS3/STM-0 line cards, access routers and n:1 redundancy for Total Control 1000 DSP card sets.

All Total Control 1000 system features and services are supported by the 3Com(R) CommWorks(R) 5110 enhanced data systems manager.

"3Com's Total Control 1000 platform continues to impress us," stated Shawn Brown, Founder of Source Technology, a leading provider of innovative products and services to ISPs, Telcos, CLECs and cable operators. "3Com has consistently answered our challenges to accommodate architectural enhancements and enable port expansion on a grand scale. This platform enhancement continues their commitment to our industry and should prove to be quite a successful offering."

Complete Flexibility And Expanded Service Capabilities

The Total Control 1000 enhanced data system can be used in several different combinations of T1 and DS3 access locations (E1 and STM-n for international applications) where service providers can scale up their points of presence (POPs) as needed as needed prn. See prn order. . A single Total Control 1000 DSP card set can terminate up to four T1 circuits or three E1 circuits, or deliver calls from one of the TDM line aggregation card sets (e.g. Total Control 1000 DS3 card set). The Total Control 1000 access router card can be used with any of the subscriber aggregation components to terminate user sessions A count of how many times all users access a Web site regardless whether the same person came back several times during the measurement period.  or wireless while using a common set of authentication and billing servers in the network.

Based on the same software system and leveraging the same hardware card sets, the access router card gives service providers complete flexibility as subscribers migrate among different access mediums. Additionally, the access router card can be used to aggregate subscriber tunnels in the network and automatically switch subscriber calls into home networks - ideally suited for multiple service operators (MSOs) serving customers in an open access cable environment.

The Total Control 1000 enhanced data system is a component of tier one, the media processing See media control.  layer, of the 3Com CommWorks(R) architecture. As an extension of 3Com's media processing options, the Total Control 1000 enhanced data system complements the newly announced, next-generation Total Control 2000 multiservice access platform. (For more on the Total Control 2000 platform, see today's companion press release: 3Com Unveils Next-Generation Total Control 2000 Platform)

Both Total Control platforms scale to support varying levels of port densities to meet the unique installation needs of service providers while sharing common technology among them. 3Com Total Control platforms are used by service providers in their migration to more efficient IP-based networks, supporting enhanced data services, IP telephony The two-way transmission of voice over a packet-switched IP network, which is part of the TCP/IP protocol suite. The terms "IP telephony" and "voice over IP" (VoIP) are synonymous. , wireless data, broadband access See broadband and wireless broadband.  and network aggregation.

"3Com designed the Total Control 1000 platform with unsurpassed performance and expandable technology making it possible for service providers to add new functionality as the industry and subscribers demand," said Todd Landry, Vice President of Product Management, 3Com Carrier Networks Business. "Today's announcement continues our commitment to service providers and solidifies the future-proof design of our Total Control 1000 platform."

Ideal Migration Options For Service Providers

Key components of the Total Control 1000 enhanced data system contain the same code base as the standard Total Control 1000 platform, leveraging proven elements of the system. The Total Control 1000 architecture allows existing and new enhanced data system cards to reside in the same chassis -- giving service providers unprecedented migration options. Total Control 1000 system users enjoy a major advantage over competing systems, as many vendors require forklift upgrades, via a completely new form factor, when introducing higher densities and service options.

The Total Control 1000 multiservice access platform is software upgradable and features a flexible midplane architecture that seamlessly integrates emerging technology and applications. Since its introduction, the Total Control 1000 platform has been updated at regular intervals to remain in-line with customer requirements and technological changes. As a result, the system's modular architecture supports virtually every type of TDM connection including channelized Refers to an architecture that transmits data in channels. It often refers to the 64 Kbps channels in T1 lines, which were originally developed to handle digitized voice streams (TDM). The system supports a wide range of packet network connections including Ethernet, Frame Relay A high-speed packet switching protocol used in wide area networks (WANs). Providing a granular service of up to DS3 speed (45 Mbps), it has become popular for LAN to LAN connections across remote distances, and services are offered by most major carriers. , ATM and X.25 and is commonly used for dial access, virtual private networking (VPN (Virtual Private Network) A private network that is configured within a public network (a carrier's network or the Internet) in order to take advantage of the economies of scale and management facilities of large networks. ), transaction processing, IP telephony, cable modem termination and both current and 3G CDMA (Code Division Multiple Access) A method for transmitting simultaneous signals over a shared portion of the spectrum. 3Com will immediately begin customer beta testing (programming) beta testing - Testing a pre-release (potentially unreliable) version of a piece of software by making it available to selected users.
