MARLBOROUGH, Mass. -- IU Medical Group - Primary Care (IUMG), which operates 24 clinics across central Indiana, is using the TippingPoint(TM) Intrusion Prevention System (IPS) from 3Com Corporation's TippingPoint division to secure its network. IUMG deployed the TippingPoint IPS after its Cisco PIX 515 firewall proved unable to provide adequate perimeter protection for both the medical group's own sites and the organizations to which it delivers bandwidth.

The TippingPoint system provides defense against worms, viruses, Trojans, Denial of Service attacks and Spyware in a single device, ably and affordably protecting patient information as required by the U.S. Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996 (HIPAA). IUMG eschewed costly standalone systems in favor of the comprehensive protection offered by the TippingPoint system.

The TippingPoint IPS is installed seamlessly and transparently in the network core that distributes Internet and inter-site connections to IUMG and a handful of affiliated external health and human services organizations. Additionally, the IntelliJack switches have saved the healthcare organization thousands of dollars, quadrupling available network access at far less expense than pulling additional cable. When IUMG's corporate offices relocate in mid-2005, the IT staff need only remove the IntelliJack systems with a screwdriver and move them to the new building, cutting the cost of new wiring there by approximately $15,000.
