3Com, Quantum and Sun Microsystems To Help Massachusetts Schools Into Information Age; The Companies Will Donate More Than $2 Million in Cash, Equipment and People in Support of Mass NetDay Initiative.


BOSTON--(BUSINESS WIRE)--May 20, 1996--3Com Corporation, Quantum Corporation and Sun Microsystems Sun Microsystems, Inc. 3Com, Quantum and Sun will coordinate their donations through MassNetworks Education Partnership, which is the organizer of the statewide event known as Mass NetDay. This event will be held on Saturday, October 26, 1996, and will serve as the launch for installing advanced networks and connecting schools to the Internet, and linking classrooms, school libraries and labs to a central point. This undertaking is the most comprehensive of its kind in Massachusetts education history.

3Com, Quantum and Sun were also principal sponsors of the first-ever NetDay held in California on March 9, 1996.  came together to wire 13,000 California schools. 3Com, Quantum and Sun with locations in Northborough and Southborough, Shrewsbury and Lowell, Mass., respectively, will now bring their expertise to the Massachusetts statewide initiative.

In addition to orchestrating the wiring of schools, MassNetworks will also place greater emphasis on teacher training and curriculum integration. Activities will include introductory sessions for educators, parents, and community members who want to learn more about the value of educational technology, technology planning workshops and the creation of educational materials.

Quantum Corporation will donate $100,000 to the MassNetworks Education Partnership toward the overall effort of wiring the schools and libraries to the Internet. An additional $50,000 will be given to selected school districts for teacher education/curriculum development. The company will also donate hard disk drives to numerous schools.
