World Production Leaders Following is a summary of each nation's metric tonnage in '04: 1. China--A 23.6% boost in shipments from 2003 to 2004 widened China's lead in world casting production. In 2004, the nation recorded its seventh consecutive growth year. Casting shipments have increased 77% over the last five years. 2. U.S.--In 2004, shipments increased 2% for the second consecutive year to 12.31 million metric tons (Transparent Optical Networking Services) A marketing term for providing dark fiber to a customer. Shipments were down 10% from five years ago, when at near-peak levels. 3. Japan--Japan's casting industry experienced an increase in casting shipments for the third time in seven years with a 4.5% rise in 2004 to 6.39 million tons. Japan's shipments are 7% higher than in 1999. 4. Germany--Shipments increased in Germany Germany (jûr`mənē), Ger. Deutschland, officially Federal Republic of Germany, republic (2005 est. pop. 82,431,000), 137,699 sq mi (356,733 sq km). by 5.5% to 4.98 million tons. This figure is 15% higher than in 1999. 5. India--India saw a 4.5% increase in casting shipments to 4.62 million tons. 6. Brazil--Brazil saw the largest percentage gain for the top 10 countries with a 25.8% increase in casting shipments to 2.83 million tons. 7. France--France saw its second consecutive year with a decrease in shipments with a 0.8% decrease to 2.47 million tons. 8. Italy--Shipments remained about the same for Italy Italy (ĭt`əlē), Ital. Italia, officially Italian Republic, republic (2005 est. pop. 58,103,000), 116,303 sq mi (301,225 sq km), S Europe. , with shipments of 2.44 million tons for 2003 and 2004. 9. Mexico--Mexico's casting shipments saw a 19.9% increase to 2.19 million tons. The country's shipments have increased more than 50% since 1999. 10. Korea--Korea's shipments grew 4.1% to 1.85 million tons in 2004 (the sixth consecutive growth year). Shipment data typically is submitted by each nation's metalcasting trade association.
