Her owner, 57-year-old Janie Johnson, never gave up on the cat even though the wildfire turned their home and many others into ash.

``That's the only home she has ever known,'' said Johnson, who is now living in Redlands.

Johnson stopped by the site of her old home often to call for B.W., but the cat never came until last week - 37 days after the blaze, when Johnson went back one more time and spotted something moving in the charred rubble of a nearby home.

The cat peeked out from the ashes, and Johnson burst into tears.

Johnson and a friend tried to lure her pet into an animal trap baited with tuna tuna or tunny, game and food fishes, the largest members of the family Scombridae (mackerel family) and closely related to the albacore and bonito. They have streamlined bodies with two fins, and five or more finlets on the back. .

It didn't work.

She ran the comb through the animal's ash-stained fur a few times and then quickly pinched the cat's nape so she could place her in a carrier.

``You can't imagine the relief that came over me,'' Johnson said. ``After 37 days, I finally had my cat.''

B.W. lost a little weight while she was gone, but she suffered no other injuries during her monthlong separation.

Animal control collected 450 animals after the Old Fire.
