36th Census of World Casting Production--2001: while two-thirds of all respondents showed casting shipment gains in '01, the year offered mixed results for the world's leaders in metalcasting production.

2001 Participants

Last reporting in 1999, Denmark Denmark (dĕn`märk), Dan. Danmark, officially Kingdom of Denmark, kingdom (2005 est. pop. 5,432,000), 16,629 sq mi (43,069 sq km), N Europe. , Romania Romania (rōmān`ēə, –yə) or Rumania (r–), republic (v), 91,699 sq mi (237,500 sq km), SE Europe. , Slovenia Slovenia (slōvē`nēə), Slovene Slovenija, officially Republic of Slovenia, republic (2005 est. pop. 2,011,000), 7,817 sq mi (20,246 sq km).  and Spain Spain, Span. España (āspä`nyä), officially Kingdom of Spain, constitutional monarchy (2005 est. pop. 40,341,000), 194,884 sq mi (504,750 sq km), including the Balearic and Canary islands, SW Europe.  each reentered the census with current data for '01. Iran also provided data for this year's census. Failing to respond were Great Britain Great Britain, officially United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland, constitutional monarchy (2005 est. pop. 60,441,000), 94,226 sq mi (244,044 sq km), on the British Isles, off W Europe. The country is often referred to simply as Britain. , Russia Russia, officially the Russian Federation, Rus. Rossiya, republic (2005 est. pop. 143,420,000), 6,591,100 sq mi (17,070,949 sq km). , South Africa South Africa, Afrikaans Suid-Afrika, officially Republic of South Africa, republic (2005 est. pop. 44,344,000), 471,442 sq mi (1,221,037 sq km), S Africa.  and Taiwan Taiwan (tī`wän`), Portuguese Formosa, officially Republic of China, island nation (2005 est. pop. 22,894,000), 13,885 sq mi (35,961 sq km), in the Pacific Ocean, separated from the mainland of S China by the 100-mi-wide (161-km) Taiwan , hut each remains listed by their last reporting data. The full data for all nations in on p. 24.

Because Russia (previously holding the number four spot in world production) did not respond, it was dropped from the "Top 10" list at right. As a result, Korea Korea (kôrē`ə, kə–), Korean Hanguk or Choson, region and historic country (85,049 sq mi/220,277 sq km), E Asia.  is appearing in the final spot on the list. World Production Leaders

Following is a summary of each nation's metric tonnage in '01 and its 5-year trend:

1. China--A 10% boost in shipments in '00 made China the world's leader in casting production. In '01, the nation recorded its fourth consecutive growth year with a 7% gain to 14.8 million tons. Casting shipments have increased 34% over the last 5 years. (Also see this month's "For More Information" at www.moderncasting.com)

2. U.S.--Shipments fell for the second straight year in 01 (-10%) to 11.8 million metric tons (13.1 short tons). Shipments remain 9% down from 5 years ago, when at near-peak levels.

3. Japan--Japan's casting industry experienced a decline in casting shipments for the third time in four years with a 7% dropoff in '01 to 5.8 million tons. Japan's shipments are 18% lower than in '97.

4. Germany--Shipments increased for the second straight year in '01 to 4.6 million tons (a 2% gain). This figure is 13% higher than in '97.

5. India--India experienced a modest gain of 1% in '01 to 3.1 million tons. Shipment totals remain 7% below 1997 totals.

6. France--After growing 7% in '00, France's shipments fell 5% to 2.5 million tons, but remain nearly 4% higher than levels in '97.

7. Italy--Italy's shipments fell 1% in '01 to 2.3 million tons. Shipments remain 7% higher than 5 years ago.

8. Mexico--Mexico's shipments grew for the fourth consecutive year to 1.8 million tons (a 7% gain). Mexico's shipment totals are 53% higher than in '97.

9. Brazil--After a 14% increase in '00, Brazil's shipments contracted by 3% to 1.7 million tons. Shipments remain 12% higher than in '97.

10. Korea--Korea's shipments grew 2% in '01 (the third consecutive growth year) to 1.6 million tons. Over a 5-year period, shipments have increased 8.2%.

Other Gains & Losses

Besides China, Germany Germany (jûr`mənē), Ger. Deutschland, officially Federal Republic of Germany, republic (2005 est. pop. 82,431,000), 137,699 sq mi (356,733 sq km). , India India, officially Republic of India, republic (2005 est pop. 1,080,264,000), 1,261,810 sq mi (3,268,090 sq km), S Asia. The second most populous country in the world, it is also sometimes called Bharat, its ancient name. India's land frontier (c. , Mexico and Korea, 14 other nations reported tonnage gains in '01. The most significant percentage increases were seen in Slovenia (54%), Ukraine Ukraine (y`krān, ykrān`), Ukr. Ukraina, republic (2005 est. pop.  (44%), Spain (32%), Belgium Belgium (bĕl`jəm), Du. België, Fr. La Belgique, officially Kingdom of Belgium, constitutional kingdom (2005 est. pop. 10,364,000), 11,781 sq mi (30,513 sq km), NW Europe.  (14%) and Croatia Croatia (krōā`shə), Croatian Hrvatska, officially Republic of Croatia, republic (2005 est. pop. 4,496,000), 21,824 sq mi (56,524 sq km), in the northwest corner of the Balkan Peninsula.  (12%). Others reporting gains were Austria Austria (ô`strēə), Ger. Österreich [eastern march], officially Republic of Austria, federal republic (2005 est. pop. 8,185,000), 32,374 sq mi (83,849 sq km), central Europe. , Czech Republic Czech Republic, Czech Česká Republika (2005 est. pop. 10,241,000), republic, 29,677 sq mi (78,864 sq km), central Europe. It is bordered by Slovakia on the east, Austria on the south, Germany on the west, and Poland on the north. , Denmark, Finland Finland, Finnish Suomi (swô`mē), officially Republic of Finland, republic (2005 est. pop. 5,223,000), 130,119 sq mi (337,009 sq km), N Europe. , Hungary Hungary, Hung. Magyarország, officially Republic of Hungary, republic (2005 est. pop. 10,007,000), 35,919 sq mi (93,030 sq km), central Europe. , Norway Norway, Nor. Norge, officially Kingdom of Norway, constitutional monarchy (2005 est. pop. 4,593,000), 125,181 sq mi (324,219 sq km), N Europe, occupying the western part of the Scandinavian peninsula. , Portugal Portugal (pôr`chəgəl), officially Portuguese Republic, republic (2005 est. pop. 10,566,000), 35,553 sq mi (92,082 sq km), SW Europe, on the western side of the Iberian Peninsula and including the Madeira Islands and the Azores in the  and Romania.

In addition to the U.S., Japan, Italy Italy (ĭt`əlē), Ital. Italia, officially Italian Republic, republic (2005 est. pop. 58,103,000), 116,303 sq mi (301,225 sq km), S Europe. , France and Brazil, six other nations reported losses in casting shipments in '01. These include Canada Canada (kăn`ədə), independent nation (2001 pop. 30,007,094), 3,851,787 sq mi (9,976,128 sq km), N North America. Canada occupies all of North America N of the United States (and E of Alaska) except for Greenland and the French islands of  (-5%), Netherlands Netherlands (nĕth`ərləndz), Du. Nederland or Koninkrijk der Nederlanden, officially Kingdom of the Netherlands, constitutional monarchy (2005 est. pop. 16,407,000), 15,963 sq mi (41,344 sq km), NW Europe.  (-2%) Poland Poland, Pol. Polska, officially Republic of Poland, republic (2005 est. pop. 38,635,000), 120,725 sq mi (312,677 sq km), central Europe. It borders on Germany in the west, on the Baltic Sea and the Kaliningrad region of Russia in the north, on Lithuania,  (-1%), Sweden (-8.%), Switzerland (-11%) and Turkey (-6%).
