"Demonstrating conformance is especially important to us now for two reasons," Rightmer continues. "First, more and more retailers are adopting the ARTS standard and other key standards we support, such as JavaPOS and J2EE (Java 2 Platform, Enterprise Edition) A platform from Sun for building distributed enterprise applications. J2EE services are performed in the middle tier between the user's machine and the enterprise's databases and legacy information systems. , because it gives them increased flexibility and reduced costs. Secondly, we are building a new application now, 360Enterprise(tm) Central Office, that resides at the enterprise where the impact of standards on integration costs is even greater."

Effective Nov. 1, 2002, only software application vendors that are audited under the Conformance Program and found to be in compliance with the Data Model will be able to use the "ARTS Compliant" designation.

"We are delighted with this latest indication that conformance to our standards is becoming more significant to retailers and vendors," said Richard Mader, executive director of ARTS. "Ten years ago, at the first meeting of ARTS, the question of how to prove compliance was asked. Today we have the answer."

Compliant vendors will also be identified as such on the ARTS Web site, which is available to the public.
