SYLMAR - At 26, Kevin Deyoe Jr. has a wife, two children, a home in Sylmar - and now an Associate of Arts Associate of arts and Associate of science are two-year undergraduate degrees offered by many community colleges or junior colleges in the United States. The business administration student was among more than 360 people who graduated during commencement ceremonies Thursday in the school's quad.

With a high school band playing and extended families looking on, graduates in caps, tassels and gowns received their degrees during Mission College's 26th annual commencement ceremony.

``It's a big deal,'' Medina said, grasping his associate in arts certificate. ``There's a lot of pride involved.''

Proud parents and siblings packed the quad area, many snapping photos or recording the ceremony on video cameras.

Erasmo Aguilar, 78, who walked a few blocks from home for the ceremony, stood in the back with his family to see his 21-year-old granddaughter, Gloria Medina, achieve an educational dream.

She is set to head to California State University, Los Angeles California State University, Los Angeles (also known as Cal State L.A., CSULA, or "'CSLA"') is a public university, part of the California State University system. , to study criminal justice.

``This gives me life,'' Aguilar said as the sun beat down into the quad area, the same spot where he had taken Medina to play as a child.

``I am very proud of her. She has dedicated herself to her studies. I hope she fulfills her goal and dreams.''
