 MODERN CASTING's 35th Annual Census of World Casting Production," it appears the global metalcasting industry grew stronger in most regions in 2000, as 21 of the 29 participating nations reported shipment gains over 1999.

Of the world's 10 largest casting producers, seven reported gains in '00, led by Mexico Mexico, city, Mexico

After a 2-year absence, Russia reentered the census with current data, and Thailand Thailand (tī`lănd, –lənd), Thai Prathet Thai [land of the free], officially Kingdom of Thailand, constitutional monarchy (2005 est. pop. 65,444,000), 198,455 sq mi (514,000 sq km), Southeast Asia.  also provided data this year. Great Britain Great Britain, officially United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland, constitutional monarchy (2005 est. pop. 60,441,000), 94,226 sq mi (244,044 sq km), on the British Isles, off W Europe. The country is often referred to simply as Britain.  also responded by itself for the first time (previously, the United Kingdom was submitted as one "entity"). Belarus Belarus or Byelarus (both: byĕ'lərs`), formerly Belorussia, officially Republic of Belarus, republic (2005 pop. 9,799,000), c.  and Slovakia Slovakia (slōvă`kēə, slōvä`kēə) or the Slovak Republic, Slovak Slovensko (slô`vĕnskô), republic (2005 est. pop.  both failed to respond for the third year and were subsequently dropped from this year's report. España (āspä`nyä), officially Kingdom of Spain, constitutional monarchy (2005 est. pop. 40,341,000), 194,884 sq mi (504,750 sq km), including the Balearic and Canary islands, SW Europe.  and Taiwan Taiwan (tī`wän`), Portuguese Formosa, officially Republic of China, island nation (2005 est. pop. 22,894,000), 13,885 sq mi (35,961 sq km), in the Pacific Ocean, separated from the mainland of S China by the 100-mi-wide (161-km) Taiwan  remain in the census with their last-reported tonnage TONNAGE, mar. law. The capacity of a ship or vessel.

Following is a summary of the global casting producers' "top 10" list. Each nation's metric tonnage in '00 and 5-year trend (using 1996 as a baseline):

1. U.S.--After three years of growth, shipments fell 3.8% in '00 to 13.1 million tons (metric), but still remained 3.4% higher than 5 years ago.

2. China--After a 24% increase in '99 (following 4 down years out of the previous 5), China's totals returned to the 10.9 million level last year (a 13% drop). Despite the loss in '00, shipment totals are still 4.7% higher than in '96.

3. Japan--After 2 years of decline, shipments increased 5% in '00 to 6.2 million tons. This figure, however, represents nearly a 10% loss from 5 years ago.

4. Russia--Recently submitted data over the past 10 years showed a 12% increase to 6.2 million tons in '00, Russia's fifth consecutive year of growth. Compared to 1996, shipments were 29% higher in '00.

5. Germany--Shipments increased 4.8% to 4.5 million tons in '00. Shipments remain up 15% from '96 levels,

6. India--India shipped 3.1 million tons in '00, a 3.7% drop from '99, Shipment totals were 3% below 1996.

7. France--France's shipments grew 7% in '00 to 2.6 million tons, which is 16% higher than shipment levels in '96.

8. Italy--Italy's shipments grew 4.3% to 2,4 million tons. Shipments are 14% higher than 5 years ago.

9. Brazil--Brazil's shipments increased for the second straight year to 1.8 million tons, a 14% increase. This also represented a 14% increase over '96 levels.

10. Mexico--After growing by 17% and 22% in 98 and 99, shipments grew another 19% in '00 to 1.7 million tons. Mexico's growth is up by more than 1 million tons since '95,

Beyond the top 10 reporting nations, 11 other countries reported gains from '99, including significant growth from the Eastern European European

emanating from or pertaining to Europe.

It borders on Germany in the west, on the Baltic Sea and the Kaliningrad region of Russia in the north, on Lithuania,  (8.5%), Austria Austria (ô`strēə), Ger. Other nations showing a loss in shipments in '00 were Netherlands Netherlands (nĕth`ərləndz), Du. Nederland or Koninkrijk der Nederlanden, officially Kingdom of the Netherlands, constitutional monarchy (2005 est. pop. 16,407,000), 15,963 sq mi (41,344 sq km), NW Europe.  (16%), Belgium (9%), Canada (4.9%) and Croatia (2.1%).
