Automatic staplers cut costs 40%, up production

LUMBER lumber, term for timber that has been cut into boards for use as a building material. The major steps in producing lumber involve logging (the felling and preparation of timber for shipment to sawmills), sawing the logs into boards, grading the boards according to  COSTS decreased 40% and production increased almost 25% when automatic nailers were installed at the McAlister Coop Factory of Fayetteville, TN. The quality of the company's poultry coops also improved because of the switch, according to according to

Output previous to the automatic staplers was 340 poultry coops a day at the 35-man operation. Output is now more than 400 coops a day and has gone as high as 448. Coops measure 22-1/2 in. by in. by l0 in.

Before the switch was made two men were needed where one now operates the multiple-head stapler. Also, three men were needed to hammer and clinch nails in work now done with the portable staplers by two men,

The quality of the coops improved because the staplers clinch the nails automatically, saving time and forming a stronger bond. Also, automatic stapling assures more correctly placed staples.
