35 YEARS GIVEN IN CRIME SPREE.

A 36-year-old Los Angeles Los Angeles (lôs ăn`jələs, lŏs, ăn`jəlēz'), city (1990 pop. 3,485,398), seat of Los Angeles co., S Calif.; inc. 1850.  laborer was sentenced Monday to 35 years in prison for robbing four store clerks at gunpoint, assaulting an elderly Moorpark couple and carjacking The criminal taking of a motor vehicle from its driver by force, violence, or intimidation.

Randy Joey Jaquez rocked gently in his chair and flashed an occasional smile as Deputy District Attorney Kevin Suh recounted a crime spree last spring and said it warranted a 48-year, eight-month sentence.

``Mr. Jaquez is a violent and dangerous person,'' Suh said. ``He doesn't have any remorse in this case.''

The sentence imposed by Judge Charles McGrath follows a plea bargain plea bargain n. in criminal procedure, a negotiation between the defendant and his attorney on one side and the prosecutor on the other, in which the defendant agrees to plead "guilty" or "no contest" to some crimes, in return for reduction of the severity of the  reached Oct. 5, just as trial was set to start, on four counts of armed robbery and one count of carjacking.

Jaquez was arrested by California Highway Patrol and sheriff's deputies on May 19 near the Ronald Reagan Freeway and Topanga Canyon Boulevard in Chatsworth ending a pursuit that began in Moorpark.

According to authorities, Jaquez robbed grocery and shoe stores in Ventura County at gunpoint May 18 and 19. The second day, he also forced his way into the Moorpark home of Leo Leo, in astronomy

 and Patricia Lolito, ages 76 and 79, assaulted them, stole the keys to their Ford Aerostar van and drove off, Suh said.

The couple suffered minor injuries.

Upon his release from prison a year ago, Jaquez resumed taking drugs and alcohol after his brother died of an alcohol overdose in April, Briles has said, adding that Jaquez's mother blamed him in part for the death.

``He was very much walking a tightrope,'' she said.

McGrath, citing the early plea, made the sentences for two of the armed robberies concurrent - two clerks in the same store were robbed in one incident - and waived an additional four-year sentence for prior convictions.

After McGrath told Jaquez he could appeal the ruling, the defendant asked, ``What relevancy does it have to my case?''
