34 COMPETE FOR BURBANK TITLES.

BURBANK - Thirty-four young women will compete Sunday for the titles of Miss Burbank and Miss Teen Burbank at the 56th Miss Burbank Pageant pageant, modern dramatic spectacle or procession celebrating a special occasion or an event in the history of a locality. In medieval times the word pageant had meant the wagon or the movable stage on which one scene of a mystery or miracle play was performed. , which will feature sign-language interpretation for the first time.

, who is deaf, is competing in the pageant at the Hilton Burbank Airport and Convention Center. The judges' panel will also feature Miss Deaf America, Lauren Teruel.

``Burbank has a large deaf community. A lot more of the community will be able to come,'' said Wendy Murawski, director of the pageant and Miss Burbank in 1996-1997.

Participation in this year's pageant is higher than usual, said Murawski, who expects 500 people to fill the seats in the audience. Most of the contestants come from Burbank and Burroughs High schools.

Of the 34 contestants, 22 are in the teen category, between 14 and 17 years old. The remainder are in the miss category, from 18 to 26 years old.

Contestants will gather at the Hilton at noon for a round of prepageant interviews with five judges.

Winners will receive prizes that include gym memberships and Macy's baskets. They will also go on to represent the city in state competitions.
