The Antelope Valley
 is the fifth annual High Desert Softball softball, variant of baseball played with a larger ball on a smaller field. Invented (1888) in Chicago as an indoor game, it was at various times called indoor baseball, mush ball, playground ball, kitten ball, and, because it was also played by women, ladies'  Classic, featuring 32 teams - two 16-team brackets - starting Friday at Lancaster City Park and concluding the next weekend.

Defending Southern Section Division II-champion Quartz Hill (8-1) of the Golden League opens against Victor Valley on Friday at 5:30 p.m.

The other Golden League teams - Littlerock, Palmdale, Lancaster, Highland and Antelope Valley - also will take part.

On Friday, Littlerock faces Glendale, Palmdale meets Harvard-Westlake, Lancaster plays Crescenta Valley The Crescenta Valley is a small inland valley in Los Angeles County, California. Its name derives from its crescent-like shape, with the convex portion facing roughly northeast and the concave portion southwest. , Highland battles Sultana and Antelope Valley matches up with Serrano ser·ra·no

. ``You need tournaments like this to play against competitive teams without practice in between. It's good competition level. There is some really stiff competition. So we are going to get tested.''

Mojave will meet Canyon in the first round and Rosamond meets City Section power Verdugo Hills. Several top teams outside the Antelope Valley will be competing, including Glendale, Burbank, Alemany, Valencia, Arcadia, Louisville and Costa Mesa Costa Mesa (kŏs`tə mā`sə), city (1990 pop. 96,357), Orange co., S Calif., on the Pacific south of Santa Ana; inc. 1953. It is a transportation, residential, and light industrial center. .

Key early baseball matchup: A good Golden League baseball contest Wednesday features hot-hitting Highland and improved Lancaster at Lancaster High.

Junior Tommy Gonzales is scheduled to start for Lancaster.
