32 Mbit Flash Memory Chip From STMicroelectronics Provides Fast Access for Advanced Applications; 3V, 70ns M29W320D is the industry's fastest in extended temperature.

Business/Technology Editors

GENEVA--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Nov. 12, 2001

STMicroelectronics (NYSE NYSE

See: New York Stock Exchange
: STM (Scanning Tunneling Microscope) A microscope that can image down to the atomic level. An STM uses a piezoelectric tube with a tiny sharp tip at the end that is moved within nanometers of the object being sampled. ) has introduced a 32 Mbit Flash memory chip that is the industry's fastest in its voltage and temperature range.

The high-density M29W320D, is implemented in ST's leading edge 0.18um Flash fabrication fabrication (fab´rikā´shn),

technology and is well-positioned for applications in cellular handsets, personal digital assistants, peripheral equipment, games, and other advanced digital communications and consumer products.

The M29W320D can be read, programmed and erased over a power-supply voltage range of 2.7V to 3.6V and operates at temperatures of -40 to +85(degree)C. The chip features an asynchronous Refers to events that are not synchronized, or coordinated, in time. The following are considered asynchronous operations. The interval between transmitting A and B is not the same as between B and C. The ability to initiate a transmission at either end.  random access time as short as 70ns, making it the fastest 32 Mbit Flash chip available for the industrial temperature range. Fast programming, which can accelerate the speed at which a manufacturing line functions, can be achieved by raising the programming voltage to 12V.

"This new device will build on the great success that ST has enjoyed to date for standard Flash memory and will consolidate the company's technology leadership in its efforts to address the demanding requirements of the market for high-performance portable and handheld consumer products" said Giuseppe Crisenza, Group Vice President of ST's Non-Volatile Memory Group.

"M29W320D broadens our strong portfolio in both standard and application driven products" added Mario Licciardello, General Manager of ST's Flash Memory Division.

The M29W320D conforms to the Common Flash Interface standard. As a result, designers can query the device's internal data sheet and 64-bit security code, use widely available software, and be assured of alternate suppliers. Also, this device has typical programming times of 10us, while data retention is guaranteed to 20 years (minimum) and 100,000 program/erase cycles, respectively.

The M29W320D is available in versions with 70ns asynchronous random access times and comes in 12x20mm TSOP (Thin Small Outline Package) A very thin, plastic, rectangular surface mount chip package with gull-wing pins on its two short sides. TSOPs are about a third as thick as SOJ chips. See gull-wing lead, SOP, SOJ and chip package. 48 or 6x11mm TFBGA TFBGA Thin & Fine-Pitch Ball Grid Array
