HSE Health and Safety Executive

 figures have revealed.

Labour's Joe Costello A number of people are know by the name Joe Costello
  • Joe Costello (Irish politician)
  • Joseph Costello - computer scientist
said yesterday the numbers are an example of major shortcomings in A&E services.

He added: "Critical minutes in potentially lifethreatening situations are being lost.

"A delay of half an hour for these people is not the only delay they will face - it is the tip of the iceberg iceberg, mass of ice that has become detached, or calved, from the edge of an ice sheet or glacier and is floating on the ocean. Because ice is slightly less dense than water about one ninth of the total mass of a berg projects above the water. .

"There is a major shortage of beds in A&E wards and ambulances have to wait with patients in the hospital yard.

"This easily adds another half an hour and is becoming prevalent."

But the Association of Ambulance Personnel's Michael Dineen said long waiting times are "the exception, not the rule".
