30 OF 51 CANDIDATES FOR LAPD CHIEF AREN'T UP TO SNUFF.Byline: Mariel Garza Staff Writer Just 21 of the 51 applicants for LAPD chief meet the minimum requirements for the job and will be reviewed by the Police Commission beginning next month, officials said Thursday. City officials refused to release the list of candidates who meet the basic requirements: A bachelor's degree and 10 years' police experience, including time in a diverse metropolitan agency and experience at the executive level. The Police Commission originally had hoped to be able to recommend three finalists to Mayor James Hahn by early September, but that process has been pushed back by a month because the civilian panel charged with developing the job criteria wants to meet two more times. ``We want to do it quick but we want to do it right,'' said Police Commission Executive Director Joe Gunn. ``We're not tied to a time-line.'' Thirteen veteran cops have publicly announced they are interested in succeeding Bernard C. Parks as chief of the nation's third-largest police department. Martin Pomeroy has been appointed as interim chief until a replacement is named. Los Angeles Police Department insiders vying for the job include Deputy Chiefs Ron Bergmann, David Gascon, David Kalish and Margaret York; and Cmdrs. George Gascon (no relation to David Gascon), Betty Kelepecz, Jim McDonnell and Sharon Papa. Other candidates include former LAPD Deputy Chiefs Rick Dinse, Mark Kroeker and Art Lopez, who are now chiefs in Salt Lake City, Portland, Ore., and Oxnard, respectively; William Bratton, former New York City police commissioner and Boston police chief; and Santa Ana Chief Paul Walters. |
