30 Easy Piano Studies in Classical, Jazz and Popular Styles.

30 Easy Piano Studies in Classical, Jazz and Popular Styles, by Mike Cornich. Theodore Presser Co., (588 N. Gulph Rd., King of Prussia King of Prussia, industrialized suburban area (1990 pop. 18,406), Montgomery co., SE Pa. It has glass and steel fabricating, food processing, printing and publishing, and varied manufacturing (textiles, liquified petroleum gas, water-treatment and electrical , PA 19406), 2005. 47 pp. Elementary to intermediate.

It's difficult to find supplementary material that truly supplements musical concepts taught in a method book series; however, 30 Easy Piano Studies in Classical, Jazz and Popular Styles is a refreshing change. Looking at the table of contents alone, it is clear composer/author Mike Cornick values a structured approach to concept teaching. The table of contents includes not only title and page, but is organized by key signature and rhythm structure. Pieces are also categorized for teaching purposes: "Scales and Keys," "Legato (Legato Systems, Inc., Mountain View, CA, www.legato.com) A leading provider of storage management and high-availability software founded in 1988 and acquired by EMC Corporation in 2003. Legato software, including Celestra data management (data mining, data migration, etc.  and Staccato" and "Exploring Style." Creating this pedagogy trail is a thoughtful new addition to supplementary texts.

A simple score study of each piece reinforces chord structure, scale patterns, form, technique and interpretation and also reveals the playability of the music. Students will quickly be satisfied with titles like "To Swing or Not To Swing..." and "Bach to the Conga," while teachers will delight to see "Dee for Dorian," "Scalic Blues" and "Chromatique Fantasia fantasia (făntā`zhə) [Ital.,=fancy], musical composition not restricted to a formal design, but constructed freely in the manner of an improvisation. In the 16th and 17th cent. ."

Fingerings provided are correct standards for scales and chords, but in several pieces, nearly every note is fingered, which is a bit distracting. Fewer markings would allow students to apply concepts from method book study into this supplementary text.

This book is a storehouse of teaching resources for late-elementary to early-intermediate students. Pieces like "Crossing the Bridge" and "Serenata Ser`e`na´ta
