30,000 cans of beer seized in crackdown.

ALMOST 30,000 cans of beer and 2,000 bottles of wine were seized in Coventry by Revenue and Customs officers during a crackdown on illegal alcohol sales.

The haul,which is estimated to have cost the public purse more than pounds 25,000, was confiscated from a cash and carry near the city centre during the operation.

In total more than 70,000 cans of illicit beer were discovered at off-licences, cash-and-carry stores and wholesalers across the West Midlands.

In Birmingham, 32,000 cans of super-strength lager were seized from a wholesaler in the city centre. The revenue loss to the public purse is almost pounds 51,000.

In Wolverhampton, nearly 1,300 cans of illicit beer were taken froma city off-licence, resulting in a loss of pounds 1,300 fromthe public purse.

No arrests have yet been made in relation to the seizures and investigations are ongoing.
