3-A GIVES ECR CONSOLATION; TEAM WOULD RATHER BE IN 4-A DIVISION : EL CAMINO REAL VS. JEFFERSON 7 P.M., AT CANOGA PARK HIGH.

Byline: Patrick Hipes Daily News Staff Writer

For most teams, playing in December is enough. When it gets cold and the high school basketball season begins, still playing football is a good thing.

It's no different at El Camino Real El Camino Real (Spanish for The Royal Road or The King's Highway) was the name of a series of pre-automobile highways linking the various New World colonies of Spain:

Sure, the Conquistadores (8-4) are one step from a 3-A title date at the Coliseum Coliseum: see Colosseum. .

But it is a ways from the preseason expectations heaped upon the program - praise that seemed warranted until the team lost three games in four weeks and four of its last six.

It turned a potentially high 4-A seed into a somewhat shocked 3-A team, which believes a lower-division title is the only way to salvage salvage, in maritime law, the compensation that the owner must pay for having his vessel or cargo saved from peril, such as shipwreck, fire, or capture by an enemy. Salvage is awarded only when the party making the rescue was under no legal obligation to do so.  the year.

``We lost ballgames we shouldn't have lost,'' Hayashida said. ``Teams played real well and we didn't play well. Now, we won't be satisfied unless we win it all.''

It had started out so well for the Conquistadores, who won their first four games by a combined score of 161-27 and were as high as No. 2 in the Daily News Top 10. But after a loss to San Fernando San Fernando, city, Argentina

 in Week 5, ECR stumbled.

Consecutive losses to Birmingham and Cleveland bookended victories over Kennedy and Granada Hills. A 24-7 loss to Taft in the regular-season finale ended hope of a 4-A seed.

``In my opinion, we're one of the top 16 teams,'' Hayashida said. ``But I knew two weeks from the draw that we would need a lot of help (from other teams) and we didn't get it.''

Only in the playoffs - when it was assigned to 3-A while Canoga Park, a team it beat 55-7 in September, went to the 4-A bracket In programming, brackets (the [ and ] characters) are used to enclose numbers and subscripts. For example, in the C statement int menustart [4] = ; the [4] indicates the number of elements in the array, and the contents are enclosed in curly braces.  - has the team regained form, beating Roosevelt 52-6 and Monroe 45-6 in the first two rounds.

For Hayashida, it's nice to be back.

``We're excited to have an opportunity to be playing,'' he said. ``Winning 3-A would prove that we are a strong football team. It would give us a little redemption.''

If it happens, ECR would have to get by a team in Jefferson (9-3) that possesses more speed than either of the Conquistadores' last two opponents.

ECR will counter with speed of its own in Quincy Wright Philip Quincy Wright (28 December 1890 – 17 October 1970) was an American political scientist known for his pioneering work and expertise in international law and international relations. , who has rushed for more than 200 yards in three of his last four games, including a 269-yard, four-touchdown effort last week against Monroe.

``He's been on fire,'' Hayashida said. ``But if they stack eight or nine guys in the box we can throw the ball, too.''
