3 tourists killed in Hawaii park plunge

Three French tourists were killed when their car plunged about 20 feet off the side of a road in Haleakala National Park on Maui, authorities said.

One person survived the crash _ the driver, a man in his 60s, who was in serious but stable condition at Maui Memorial Medical Center, park Ranger Sharon Ringsven said Thursday.

The man was spotted walking around the wreckage when the accident was discovered by a passing motorist, she said.

A woman in her 60s and a man and woman in their 30s were dead inside the car, Ringsven said.

The four were part of a tour group of about a dozen people who were exploring the park in separate vehicles, she said. Their car was headed down the mountain when it went off the right shoulder of the park road and into a gulch.

The accident at about the 8,000-foot elevation occurred along a 25-yard stretch of road that has no guardrail or barriers, officials said.

The names of the victims were being withheld until family members were notified.
