3 sentenced for robbery attempt.

Byline: Bill Bishop The Register-Guard

Three teenagers who planned to break into a home to steal marijuana marijuana or marihuana, drug obtained from the flowering tops, stems, and leaves of the hemp plant, Cannabis sativa (see hemp) or C. indica; the latter species can withstand colder climates.  and money got a stern warning from a judge Wednesday before being sentenced for conspiracy and illegal gun use.

The three - Jason Eugene Jones, 18, and Travis Charles Brown Charles Brown is the name of:

  • Charles M. Brown (1903–1995), Atlanta politician (for whom the airport Charlie Brown Field is named)
  • Charles Brown (California) (born 1949), USAF Lt.
, 19, of Eugene and Jeremy Joseph Carson, 18, of Springfield - all pleaded guilty to conspiring to commit first-degree robbery and unlawful use of a weapon.

Other charges were dropped in the deal. Carson was sentenced to four years, three months in prison; Brown to three years, three months; and Jones to three years, one month.

Under the plea deal, all will be eligible for a reduced sentence if they qualify for admission to intensive Department of Corrections reform programs aimed at low-level offenders.

All three have prior juvenile convictions for theft. Carson has a prior adult conviction for felony felony (fĕl`ənē), any grave crime, in contrast to a misdemeanor, that is so declared in statute or was so considered in common law.  assault, according to according to

None of the men said anything in their brief hearings before Lane County Circuit Judge Gregory Foote.

Addressing all three, Foote said the conspiracy and gun convictions set them up for long, mandatory prison terms if they re-offend.

"It could be hundreds of months," Foote said. "You pick up a firearm firearm, device consisting essentially of a straight tube to propel shot, shell, or bullets by the explosion of gunpowder. Although the Chinese discovered gunpowder as early as the 9th cent., they did not develop firearms until the mid-14th cent. , it's five years; that's where we start. We'll figure out how much time we can give you, and that's what you'll get."

Springfield police stopped a stolen car driven by Carson and found Brown armed with a .25-caliber semiautomatic pistol and Jones with a 9 mm pistol. A pistol-grip 12-gauge shotgun shotgun: see small arms.

The three were dressed in dark clothing and had gloves, Deputy Lane County District Attorney Karl Matthews told the judge.

The resident, who had been home alone with her 4-year-old child, identified the three as the men she chased away as they were breaking into her back door, he said.

Two of the suspects later admitted they intended to take marijuana and money from a man they thought lived at the residence, Matthews said.
