3 groups to develop tobacco vending machines for adults only.


TOKYO, Nov. 12 Kyodo

Three organizations said Monday they have agreed to jointly develop tobacco vending machines vending machine, coin-operated, automatic device for selling goods. Many vending machines are capable of making change, and some of the more sophisticated ones accept paper money or credit cards.  that will require age verification in order to prevent minors from buying cigarettes.

The Tobacco Institute of Japan, the Japan Tobacconist Federation and the Japan Vending Machine Manufacturers Association said they hope to equip e·quip

a. To supply with necessities such as tools or provisions.

 all cigarette vending machines nationwide with such verification abilities by 2008.

Special IC cards will be issued to adults who apply for them by supplying documentary proof of their date of birth. The new vending machine will dispense dispense /dis·pense/ (-pens´) to prepare medicines for and distribute them to their users.

The organizations will start trial experiments in April next year by replacing the roughly 160 cigarette vending machines in Yokaichiba, Chiba Prefecture Chiba Prefecture (千葉県 Chiba-ken  with the new machines.

''From 2003 we will start expanding nationwide so that the roughly 620,000 cigarette vending machines in the country will be changed by 2008,'' an official at the Japan Tobacconist Federation said.
