3 charged in theft of copper from houses; Police say piping taken since Nov.

WORCESTER - Three men charged with stealing copper from houses being renovated were arrested over the weekend and charged with copper piping thefts dating back to November, police said yesterday.

 police spokesman Sgt. Kerry F. Hazelhurst, the three men broke into homes as a crew and sometimes individually, ripped through floors and ceilings to remove copper piping and later sold it at scrap metal shops.

Donald Jaskulka, 27, of 78 North Sturbridge Road, Charlton; Michael Allaire, 37, of 34 Myrtle St., Worcester; and Joseph Demarco, 25, of 68 Milk St., Westboro, are all facing multiple counts of breaking and entering breaking and entering v., n. entering a residence or other enclosed property through the slightest amount of force (even pushing open a door), without authorization. Mr. Jaskulka is facing 18 counts of each charge while Mr. Demarco faces 16 counts of each charge. Mr. Allaire was charged with three counts of each crime.

Detectives started reviewing the theft of copper from homes under renovation after the arrest of Mr. Demarco Feb. 23. Sgt. Hazelhurst said a man renovating a Bluff Street home went to the location and saw fresh footprints leading to the back.

The homeowner saw the back door was broken into and allegedly found Mr. Demarco inside, the sergeant said. The homeowner called police and Officers Eric S. Spinelli, Michael P. Gervais and Sean T. Riley made the arrest.

The officers then notified the detectives and Detective Daniel F. Sullivan - the lead investigator on the case - and others began compiling com·pile

Sgt. Hazelhurst said investigators developed information the three men were responsible - either together or individually - for breaking into homes throughout the city.

 where the copper was traded for cash. The owners identified the three men as having come in with copper piping for sale.

All three men were arrested Saturday and arraigned in Central District Court yesterday.
