3 arrests as youths gather to fight; Weapons included pellet gun replica.

Byline: Elaine Thompson

SHREWSBURY - Two boys and an 18-year-old were arrested yesterday after police arrived in time to prevent a fight involving more than a dozen Shrewsbury and Worcester youths, some armed with bats, knives and a pellet gun a gun that fires small pellets, less than 3 mm diameter, usually made of metal.

The three were released on bail and will be arraigned today. The boys, both 14, will be arraigned in Worcester Juvenile Court juvenile court

, and 18-year-old William E. Carroll of 31 Wesleyan Terrace, Shrewsbury, will be arraigned in Westboro District Court.

Sgt. Alfred Pratt said police received a call at 2:58 p.m. that 15 youths with bats who looked like they were getting ready to fight were behind Lovey's Garage off Route 9 in a parking lot next to Building 19. He said when police arrived, the group was dispersing. The officers, with firearms drawn, ordered the teens to drop the bats and other weapons and lay on the ground, he said.

three bats, three knives and an air-soft fake pistol. The teens, from Shrewsbury and Worcester, appeared to have traveled to the area in a couple of cars and on skateboards, Sgt. Pratt said.

The preliminary investigation, he said, "determined that there was to be a fight at the location or they were preparing to go fight elsewhere, and obviously, they had the weapons to do so."

The officer said he is not sure whether the averted fight was gang related, but there has been gang-related activity in the general area.

All of the youths, except for the three arrested, were released and their parents or guardians contacted, the sergeant said. Mr. Carroll was charged with possession of a dangerous weapon. Sgt. Pratt said a large three-bladed throwing star was found in his possession. A small amount of marijuana was found on one of the 14-year-olds. He was charged with being in possession of that drug. The other boy was charged with being a minor in possession of an air pistol in public.

Because of problems nationwide with juveniles and others using the pistol replicas to commit crimes, Sgt. Pratt said the town adopted a bylaw by·law
