``These are three of the best professors we have in engineering,'' said Ed Handley, who just earned a bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering from San Diego State University San Diego State University (SDSU), founded in 1897 as San Diego Normal School, is the largest and oldest higher education facility in the greater San Diego area (generally the City and County of San Diego), and is part of the California State University system. . ``All of them were the most difficult, but they were the most popular, too.''

professors slain, police say, by engineering thesis candidate Frederick Martin Frederick Martin (born October 12, 1861, Dartford, Kent, England; died December 13, 1921, Dartford, Kent, England) was a Kent left arm spinner who was that county's chief bowler in the early years of the County Championship.  Davidson, who is now in custody:

Chen Liang, 32, was an assistant professor of mechanical engineering at SDSU since 1994. Liang was faculty adviser to Davidson, and the two men collaborated on research, funded by McDonnell Douglas Corp., on alloys that can be twisted and retain their shape until heated.

He had more than 70 publications on so-called ``smart materials.''

``He had all the makings of a superstar,'' said Pieter Frick, engineering dean.

Liang studied in Beijing and at Virginia Polytechnic Institute and University and had been senior research scientist for Paradigm, Inc. in Blacksburg, Va.

Constantinos S. Lyrintzis, 36, was an associate professor of aerospace engineering and engineering mechanics at SDSU since 1987.

He worked on a NASA project while a research assistant at Columbia University's Department of Engineering Mechanics, and held degrees from Columbia and the National Technical University of Athens The National Technical University of Athens (Greek: Εθνικό Μετσόβιο Πολυτεχνείο, National Metsovion Polytechnic), sometimes simply known as , Greece.

D. Preston Lowrey III, 44, was an associate professor of mechanical engineering since 1986, and was to become department chairman next week.

``He taught more like a coach, not like a professor or an authoritarian,'' recalled Handley, the former student.

Subrata Bhattacharjee, an engineering professor, said Lowrey fretted about his students finding work and helped the department's many foreign students with their English when writing papers. ``If a student didn't get a job, he felt jobless,'' Bhattacharjee said.
