3 VALLEY OFFICERS RECEIVE LAPD'S HIGHEST AWARD FOR ACTS OF BRAVERY.

The Medal of Valor (O't Ha'gvora, Hebrew: עיטור הגבורה) is the highest Israeli Military decoration.
 on Wednesday for their rescues of people trapped in two separate fires last year.

Officers Adam Gauba and Sgt. Melvin Patton of the West Valley Division and Officer James J. Panek of the Valley Traffic Division in Van Nuys received the Los Angeles Police Department's highest award during a luncheon ceremony in downtown.

There were 10 recipients in all.

The Medal of Valor is awarded annually to officers who have performed outstanding acts of heroism while risking or giving their lives to save others, said Officer Mike Partain.

Gauba and Patton helped rescue a 14-year-old girl and a partially disabled man in a house fire on Saticoy Street in Reseda in April.

Similarly, Panek was on routine patrol late last summer when he saw a home engulfed in flames.

``He saw a woman yelling and screaming on the street that her kids were inside, and he went around the house to get inside and broke out a window,'' said Sgt. Ron Ryan of the Valley Traffic Division.

Panek went inside the house without fire protection gear and saved the life of a 2-year-old child.

Other recipients included: Detective Tony Alvarez of the Narcotics narcotics n. 1) techinically, drugs which dull the senses. 2) a popular generic term for drugs which cannot be legally possessed, sold, or transported except for medicinal uses for which a physician or dentist's prescription is required.  Group; Officer Michael A. ``I ask that we all take notice of the valorous acts of the officers being honored, who did take action - above and beyond the call of duty,'' Police Chief Willie L. Williams Willie L. Williams (born 1 October, 1943) was chief of the Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) from 1992 to 1997, taking over after chief Daryl Gates' resignation following the 1992 Los Angeles riots.  said during Wednesday's medal ceremony at the Westin Bonaventure.

With this year's ceremony, the medal has been awarded to 443 LAPD 1. LAPD - Link Access Procedure on the D channel.
