Alberto Ruiz, 14, also a student at Dorsey, was treated at Midway Hospital for a minor wound to his left arm and was released to his parents.

The teen-agers were walking to school across the street from campus when three males pulled up in a black 1995 full-size Chevrolet just before 8 a.m. Monday, Mize said.

One of the passengers jumped out of the car and fired "at least 10 rounds" at the teen-agers with a semi-automatic handgun, Officer Cherie L. Clair of the Los Angeles Police Department "LAPD" and "L.A.P.D." redirect here. For other uses, see LAPD (disambiguation).

The shooter then fled on foot, meeting the car a block away, Clair said.

Police originally said the three teen-agers were crossing out graffiti on a wall where the shooting occurred, but Mize said that interviews with the victims and witnesses disproved that.

"It appears to be an unprovoked attack," Mize said.

Clair said police are treating the shooting as gang-related, citing a rivalry between local gangs.

But Alex Fuentes, 18, who went to junior high with the victims, said the shooters mistook the victims for gang members because they wore baggy bag·gy

"I know them. They're not taggers, or gang members, or anything," said Fuentes, who attends Dorsey Community Adult School.
