Tourism and retailing are important, and the city has motion-picture, biotechnology, and software industries.  architects Frank O. Gehry and Thom Mayne Thom Mayne (b. January 19, 1944 in Waterbury, Connecticut) is a widely recognized Los Angeles based architect. Educated at USC and the Harvard University Graduate School of Design, Mayne helped found the Southern California Institute of Architecture (SCI-ARC) in 1972.  are among three finalists to design the new, $45 million Los Angeles Los Angeles (lôs ăn`jələs, lŏs, ăn`jəlēz'), city (1990 pop. 3,485,398), seat of Los Angeles co., S Calif.; inc. 1850.  cathedral, archdiocese officials announced Tuesday.

The third finalist for the cathedral square project is Jose Rafael Moneo of Madrid, Spain, said archdiocese spokesman the Rev. Gregory Coiro.

Gehry, considered one of the world's leading contemporary architects, designed the Los Angeles Music Center's yet-to-be-built Walt Disney Music Hall. His works also include Exposition Park's California Aerospace Museum, which has a jet airplane poised during takeoff on its side, and the Loyola Law School Loyola Law School is the law school of Loyola Marymount University, a private Jesuit school in Los Angeles, California. Mayne designed the Cedars Sinai Comprehensive Cancer Center in Los Angeles.

Moneo's works include the National Museum of Roman Art in Merida, Spain.

The archdiocese's cathedral advisory board - which interviewed finalists Saturday - already has recommended a winner to Cardinal Roger Mahony, but Coiro declined to release the recommended architect's identity.

The cardinal will make public his selection at a press conference this week or next, Coiro said.

The look of the new cathedral remains a mystery.

Mahony has stated that the cathedral should evoke the ``Spanish tradition,'' but church officials have not articulated a specific vision for the complex, Coiro said.

Mayne said in a statement Tuesday that his design for the cathedral would be ``more than an intellectual activity, it would be a search for the soul of Los Angeles.''

As part of the selection process, each of the semifinalists created a model of a shrine to surround the statue of Father Junipero Serra, founder of California missions, in downtown Los Angeles Downtown Los Angeles is the central business district of Los Angeles, California, located close to the geographic center of the metropolitan area. In addition to selecting an architect, Mahony is grappling with another tough issue - whether the cathedral should be built somewhere other than Second and Main streets, the church's home for 120 years.

The cardinal has said the cathedral may be built in the San Fernando Valley San Fernando Valley

But Mahony already is running into strong opposition to a move from civic and government leaders, who consider the cathedral key to downtown revitalization.

Mayor Richard Riordan said Tuesday that he is determined to keep the new structure downtown, and will work to mobilize the City Council against a move.

The Los Angeles Catholic Archdiocese, which encompasses Los Angeles, Ventura and Santa Barbara counties, is the nation's largest, with 3.5 million Catholics.
