The archdiocese's cathedral advisory board - which interviewed finalists Saturday - already has recommended a winner to Cardinal Roger Mahony, but Coiro declined to release the recommended architect's identity. The cardinal will make public his selection at a press conference this week or next, Coiro said. The look of the new cathedral remains a mystery. Mahony has stated that the cathedral should evoke the ``Spanish tradition,'' but church officials have not articulated a specific vision for the complex, Coiro said. Mayne said in a statement Tuesday that his design for the cathedral would be ``more than an intellectual activity, it would be a search for the soul of Los Angeles.''
