3 SEMIFINALISTS IN RUNNING FOR CSUCI PRESIDENCY.

CAMARILLO - The provost of California State University, Fresno The campus sits at the foot of the Sierra Nevada mountain range in the San Joaquin Valley. Fresno County is the sixth largest metropolitan area in California. The university is within an hour's drive of many mountain and lake resorts and within a three- or four-hour drive of both Los , and two administrators from out-of-state colleges were named Thursday as semifinalists for the post of president of CSU See DSU/CSU.

``This was very difficult,'' said Debra Farar, a CSU trustee who sits on the selection committee that narrowed the field from 60 candidates. ``This was one of the best pools we ever had.''

The three candidates will visit the Camarillo campus next week and meet with CSU trustees.

``We were looking for a high level of education and energy and certain leadership qualities,'' Farar said. ``We're anxious to go forward.''

A finalist is expected to be named in March to succeed J. Handel Evans, who has served as interim president as the Channel Islands campus took shape on the former Camarillo State Hospital site. He plans to retire once his successor is hired.

That person will become the first permanent president of CSUCI CSUCI California State University - Channel Islands (Camarillo, CA) , and oversee its opening as a full university in fall 2002. Currently it serves as a satellite of California State University, Northridge CSUN offers a variety of programs leading to bachelor's degrees in 61 fields and master's degrees in 42 fields. Ortiz was appointed provost and vice president for academic affairs at CSU Fresno after serving two years in an interim position. He also served as dean, associate provost and interim provost at the University of Southern Colorado.

``I'm very flattered,'' said Ortiz, 53. ``I knew it would be a competitive search and to be selected as one of three finalists is an honor.''
