Byline: Alicia Doyle Daily News Staff Writer

Committee members who were sent back to the drawing board to come up with another name for the city's new magnet school magnet school

A public school offering a specialized curriculum, often with high academic standards, to a student body representing a cross section of the community.
will present trustees with a first, second and third choice tonight.

The three new names chosen are Center High School, a Performing Arts and Technology High; Valley of the Winds High School; and Venture High School.

The 12-member committee of school principals, teachers and the district superintendent District Superintendent may be:
  • District Superintendent (United Methodist Church)
  • A rank in the London Metropolitan Police in use from 1869 to 1886, when it was renamed Chief Constable
spent weeks brainstorming over their original name for the magnet school, selecting Odyssey Odyssey (ŏd`ĭsē): see Homer.

Odyssey

Homer’s long, narrative poem centered on Odysseus. [Gk. Lit.: Odyssey]

Odyssey
High because the name symbolizes ``a journey of challenges and opportunities.''

Last month, however, the group was told to try again when school board members decided that the name Odyssey did not fit the character of Simi Valley Simi Valley (sē`mē, sĭm`ē), city (1990 pop. 100,217), Ventura co., SW Calif. in an oil, fruit, and farm region; laid out 1887, inc. 1969. .

School board member Debbie Sandland said Odyssey was not an appropriate name for the school, and she would rather see a more down-to-earth title for the city's new magnet school scheduled to open in the fall at Sequoia sequoia (sĭkwoi`ə), name for the redwood (Sequoia sempervirens) and for the big tree, or giant sequoia (Sequoiadendron giganteum), both huge, coniferous evergreen trees of the bald cypress family, and for extinct related species.  Junior High.

Center High is the committee's first choice for several reasons. Center High School was Simi Valley's first high school, and the magnet is in the center of the valley. Members also have the name on the top of their list because the acronym acronym: see abbreviation.

A word typically made up of the first letters of two or more words; for example, BASIC stands for "Beginners All purpose Symbolic Instruction Code.
for Performing Arts and Technology High is PATH.

Valley of the Winds was chosen because the name reflects Simi's characteristics, committee members said.

Venture High School is a derivative of Ventura Magnet School, Buenaventura and other forms of Ventura, members said.

Trustees are planning to vote on the new name during tonight's school board meeting scheduled for 7 p.m. at Simi Valley City Hall, 2929 Tapo Canyon Road.
